How to Get ClaveÚnica from Abroad: Access Chilean Government Services Remotely

How to Get ClaveÚnica from Abroad

ClaveÚnica is Chile's universal digital identity key — the login credential for virtually every online government service. If you are managing a death in Chile from abroad, you will need it for critical procedures: filing the online Posesión Efectiva, submitting inheritance tax declarations to the SII, requesting death certificates from the Civil Registry, and accessing the apostille portal.

The problem is that ClaveÚnica was designed for people physically in Chile. Getting it from overseas requires a specific process through Chilean consulates, and most guides only explain the in-person route.

What ClaveÚnica Unlocks

For estate and death-related procedures, ClaveÚnica gives you access to:

  • Registro Civil online portal — request death certificates, marriage certificates, and birth certificates without visiting a physical office
  • Posesión Efectiva filing — the administrative inheritance resolution for intestate estates can be filed entirely online
  • SII tax portal — file inheritance tax declarations (Form 4423 for intestate, Form 4412 for testate)
  • Apostille portal — obtain Hague Apostilles for Chilean documents being sent abroad
  • CMF portal — search for the deceased's life insurance policies, stock holdings, and financial instruments

Without it, all of these become in-person processes that require either your physical presence in Chile or a local representative with a power of attorney.

Who Can Get ClaveÚnica

You need a Chilean RUT (Rol Único Tributario — tax identification number) to obtain a ClaveÚnica. This applies to:

  • Chilean citizens living abroad
  • Foreign nationals with Chilean residency (permanent or temporary)
  • Foreigners who have previously obtained a RUT for tax or property purposes

If you have never had a RUT and are not a Chilean citizen, you cannot get a ClaveÚnica directly. In this case, you will need a local representative in Chile — either a trusted person or an attorney — to handle the in-person filings on your behalf using their own ClaveÚnica or by attending government offices physically.

Getting ClaveÚnica via Consulate Video Conference

The Servicio de Registro Civil e Identificación now offers ClaveÚnica activation through Chilean consulates abroad. The process:

Step 1: Book an appointment. Contact the Chilean consulate nearest to you and request a ClaveÚnica activation appointment. Some consulates allow online booking; others require a phone call or email. Wait times vary by consulate — major cities (New York, London, Sydney, Madrid) tend to have longer queues.

Step 2: Attend the video conference or in-person appointment. The consulate verifies your identity using your Chilean ID card (cédula de identidad) or passport. Some consulates conduct this via video conference; others require in-person attendance.

Step 3: Receive your activation. Once identity is verified, the consulate activates your ClaveÚnica. You will set a password and can immediately access online government services.

Recovering a Forgotten ClaveÚnica

If you previously had a ClaveÚnica but forgot the password, recovery options depend on what you registered originally:

  • Email/phone recovery: If you registered an email or phone number, use the self-service recovery on the ClaveÚnica portal
  • Consulate recovery: If self-service fails, the consulate can re-verify your identity and reset your access
  • In-Chile recovery: Any Registro Civil office in Chile can reset it in person with your ID

The Power of Attorney Alternative

If ClaveÚnica is not feasible — you do not have a RUT, the consulate appointment is weeks away, or the deceased's affairs cannot wait — the practical alternative is granting a power of attorney (mandato especial) to someone in Chile.

The power of attorney must be:

  1. Notarized in your home country
  2. Apostilled in your home country
  3. Translated into Spanish by a certified translator
  4. Presented at the relevant Chilean offices by your representative

This is more expensive and slower to set up than ClaveÚnica, but it gives your representative full authority to act on your behalf for specified procedures — and they can use their own ClaveÚnica to access the online portals.

Planning Ahead

If you are a Chilean citizen abroad or a foreign national with Chilean ties, activating your ClaveÚnica before an emergency happens saves critical time. The consulate appointment that takes a week under normal circumstances becomes an agonizing delay when you are trying to register a death or file for estate access.

The Chile Expat Death Guide includes a pre-emergency preparation checklist covering ClaveÚnica activation, document pre-positioning, and the specific powers of attorney you should have ready if you hold assets in Chile or have family members living there.
