Funeral Insurance Kenya: Last Expense Cover Options and What They Actually Pay

Funeral Insurance Kenya: Last Expense Cover Options and What They Actually Pay

A standard Kenyan funeral costs between KES 150,000 and KES 500,000 when you add up mortuary storage, the casket, hearse hire, catering, and cemetery fees. Private mortuaries charge KES 2,000 to KES 2,500 per day, and every day of delay while the family raises funds increases the total bill. Last expense insurance is designed to prevent this spiral — paying out a lump sum within 48 to 72 hours of death notification so the family can cover immediate costs without borrowing.

Here is what is available in the Kenyan market.

Britam Heshima Farewell Plan

Britam's Heshima Farewell Plan is the most widely marketed last-expense product in Kenya, available to individuals and groups (Chamas, SACCOs, SMEs).

Premiums and coverage:

  • Basic: Annual premium from KES 1,000 → KES 100,000 benefit
  • Premium: Annual premium from KES 1,850 → up to KES 500,000 benefit

Payout speed: Within 72 hours of notification and proof of death.

Waiting periods:

  • Accidental death: Zero waiting period
  • Natural death (policyholder and dependants): 1 month
  • Natural death (parents and parents-in-law): 3 months

The group product is particularly popular with SACCOs and workplace welfare committees, where pooled premiums bring per-member costs down significantly.

SHA Taifa Care Last Expense Cover

Under the Social Health Authority's Taifa Care universal coverage program, active contributors are entitled to a government-subsidised last-expense cover of KES 100,000.

This is separate from the NSSF funeral grant (KES 2,500) and any private insurance. To claim, contact the nearest SHA branch office or use the SHA USSD service (*147#) to initiate the claim process.

Civil servants and police legacy schemes: Under the former NHIF managed schemes, civil servants and National Police Service/Kenya Prisons Service members had enhanced coverage — KES 200,000 for the principal member and KES 50,000 for one declared dependent, payable within 72 working hours. These legacy liabilities have been transferred to the SHA.

Other Private Options

Private last-expense policies in Kenya generally offer:

  • Coverage limits from KES 50,000 to KES 500,000
  • Payout within 48 to 72 hours
  • Zero waiting period for accidental deaths
  • 1-month waiting period for natural illness deaths
  • Extended 3-month waiting period for elderly dependants over 70

When comparing products, pay attention to:

  • The waiting period for natural death — if a parent dies of illness within the first month, the policy will not pay out
  • Covered dependants — some policies cover only the principal member and spouse; others extend to parents and children
  • Exclusions — pre-existing conditions, suicide clauses, and specific disease exclusions vary

Why Last Expense Insurance Matters in Kenya

The financial shock of a death is immediate. Banks freeze the deceased's individual accounts within hours of notification, and any Power of Attorney expires automatically on death. The family's only liquid cash is what they have in their own accounts, plus whatever community contributions (harambee) come in.

Meanwhile, hospitals and mortuaries apply daily charges. Private providers like Lee Funeral Home require full payment 24 hours before any viewing, release, or cremation — they will not accept promises tied to estate or probate funds. Without ready cash, the body stays in the mortuary, accumulating fees.

A last-expense payout of KES 100,000 to KES 500,000 within 72 hours breaks this cycle. It covers the mortuary bill, casket, and hearse hire — the three biggest immediate costs — while the family sorts out the longer-term succession process.
