NSSF Death Benefits Kenya: How to Claim the Funeral Grant and Survivor's Benefit

NSSF Death Benefits Kenya: How to Claim the Funeral Grant and Survivor's Benefit

When an NSSF member dies, their family is entitled to two separate benefits: a KES 2,500 funeral grant that must be claimed within three months (or it is permanently forfeited), and the survivor's benefit — a lump-sum payout of the member's accumulated contributions plus interest. Most families do not know about both, and the three-month deadline on the funeral grant catches many off guard.

The NSSF Funeral Grant

Amount: KES 2,500 — a flat payment from the NSSF general pool, not deducted from the member's personal pension savings.

Eligibility: The deceased must have been registered with NSSF, made at least three monthly contributions, and not had their retirement benefits paid out before death.

Deadline: The claim must be filed within three months of the member's death. There is no extension. After three months, the grant is forfeited permanently.

How to claim: The nominated family representative files at the local NSSF branch with:

  • Deceased's original NSSF card
  • Copy of the deceased's national ID
  • Local administration documents confirming the claimant's nomination (chief's letter)
  • Original death certificate

The payment is made directly to the nominated dependant.

The Survivor's Benefit

Amount: The deceased member's total accumulated NSSF contributions plus accrued interest. This can be a significant sum for long-term contributors.

Priority order: NSSF pays the survivor's benefit in strict priority:

  1. Surviving spouse (husband or wife)
  2. All biological and legally adopted children — if the spouse is deceased or the member was a single parent
  3. The deceased's parents — if the member was unmarried and childless
  4. Surviving siblings — if the member was single, childless, and both parents are deceased
  5. The legally appointed guardian of minor children — if both parents are deceased
  6. A court-appointed administrator holding Letters of Administration — if all other relatives are exhausted

Required documents: The claimant completes the Survivor's Benefit Application Form (SF/BN/SB/002A), which must be endorsed by local administration (assistant county commissioner or chief). They also need:

  • Deceased's original NSSF membership card
  • Certified copies of marriage certificate (or customary marriage letter)
  • Birth certificates of all children
  • Original death certificate
  • Claimant's national ID

If the pension balance is high, NSSF may require formal Letters of Administration from the court before paying out.

SHA (Taifa Care) Last Expense Cover

In addition to NSSF, families should check whether the deceased was an active contributor to the Social Health Authority (SHA) under the Taifa Care program. Active contributors are entitled to a government-subsidized last-expense cover of KES 100,000 paid to the family.

For former civil servants and National Police Service members under legacy NHIF managed schemes, the last-expense benefit was higher: KES 200,000 for the principal member and KES 50,000 for a declared dependent, payable within 72 working hours of reporting.

All legacy NHIF claims have been transferred to the SHA. If the family has outstanding NHIF claims, they should be directed to the SHA for processing.

Common Mistakes

Missing the 3-month funeral grant deadline. Most families focus on the larger survivor's benefit and do not realise the funeral grant has its own tight deadline.

Not endorsing the application form. The Survivor's Benefit Application Form requires endorsement by local administration. Submitting it without the chief's or assistant county commissioner's stamp results in rejection and resubmission delays.

Assuming Letters of Administration are always required. For smaller balances, NSSF may process the claim based on the nomination card and supporting documents alone. Letters of Administration are typically only required when the balance is large or there is a dispute among potential beneficiaries.

The Guide to Funeral Customs and Burial Law in Kenya includes the full NSSF claim process, SHA benefit details, and a timeline showing when to file each claim to avoid forfeiting any entitlements.
