South Korea Funeral for Foreigners: What to Expect and What It Costs

Korean funerals follow a structured three-day format that runs 24/7 in hospital funeral halls. If you are an English-speaking family member navigating this for the first time, the process will feel unfamiliar — but it follows predictable steps that you can prepare for.

The Three-Day Samiljang

The traditional Korean funeral, called Samiljang (삼일장), spans three continuous days, typically held at a specialized funeral hall attached to a hospital (장례식장). These are purpose-built facilities with viewing rooms, dining areas for guests, and on-site cremation coordination.

During the Samiljang, the chief mourner (sangju) — usually the eldest son or closest surviving relative — receives visitors continuously. Guests pay their respects, offer condolence money (조의금) in white envelopes, and share a meal. The mourning period runs around the clock, so family members effectively live at the funeral hall for three days.

Mourning Etiquette

If you are attending or hosting a Korean funeral:

  • Male family members wear black suits with a white hemp armband
  • Female family members wear simple black or white hanbok with a white ribbon
  • Guests should wear dark, conservative clothing with long socks — shoes are removed before entering the altar room
  • Bright colors, bare skin, and formal handshakes are not appropriate
  • Guests bow twice toward the portrait of the deceased, then bow once to the chief mourner

Cremation Booking

Cremation has become the predominant choice in South Korea. Reservations are centralized through the e-Haneul Funeral Information System (e하늘 장사정보시스템), operated by the Ministry of Health and Welfare. This is the sole portal for booking municipal cremation facilities.

Book as early as possible — cremation slots in Seoul and major cities fill quickly, especially on preferred days. Municipal cremation fees run 50,000 to 100,000 KRW for local residents. Non-residents face higher fees, potentially up to 1,000,000 KRW.

For foreigners without an Alien Registration Card, crematoriums typically require an official cremation letter from your embassy before they will proceed. Request this from your embassy in Seoul as soon as the death is confirmed.

Embalming

If the body will be repatriated rather than cremated locally, professional embalming is required under IATA regulations for international transport. South Korean funeral service providers can arrange embalming, though availability varies — not all hospital funeral halls offer this service. Embalming costs range from $800 to $1,500 USD.

Funeral Costs

Hospital funeral halls charge for facility rental, meals served to guests, and cremation coordination. Total costs often run into millions of KRW. The immediate financial pressure is compounded by the fact that the deceased's bank accounts are frozen upon death — families must pay out of pocket or rely on condolence money collected during the funeral.

Do not attempt to withdraw funds from the deceased's accounts to pay funeral expenses. The Financial Supervisory Service classifies this as computer fraud, even when the money is used for legitimate funeral costs.

After the Funeral

After the Samiljang, the family moves into estate administration. A formal Report of Death must be filed within one month. The three-month debt shield deadline, six-month tax filing deadline, and one-year Ansim asset search window all start running from the date of death.

The South Korea Expat Death Guide covers the complete post-funeral administrative sequence, including deadline trackers and the document checklist for each government agency.
