Embassy Death Notification in South Korea: US, UK, and Canadian Procedures

When a foreign national dies in South Korea, the family must notify their home country's embassy in Seoul. This is not optional — the embassy issues documents required for probate, pension cancellation, and identity closure in the home country. Each embassy has its own process and requirements.

US Embassy in Seoul

The U.S. Embassy issues a Consular Report of Death of a U.S. Citizen Abroad (CRODA), the official US government record of a citizen's death overseas. Required documents:

  • Copy of the Korean death certificate (Korean or English accepted)
  • Deceased's original passport
  • Social Security number
  • Proof of relationship from the next-of-kin

The embassy can issue an electronic CRODA (e-CRODA) within 1 to 3 business days of receiving complete paperwork. However, final processing and permanent filing with the Department of State takes four to six months.

Cremation letter: If the deceased did not hold an Alien Registration Card (ARC) or valid visa, Korean crematoriums will not perform cremation without an official letter from the embassy. The US Embassy issues these electronically upon email request — request it immediately, as cremation slots book quickly.

Provisional conservatorship: If no next-of-kin is physically present in Korea, a US consular officer can act as temporary conservator of the deceased's personal effects — taking possession of belongings, paying outstanding local bills (hospital, hotel) from estate funds, and coordinating shipment home.

UK Embassy in Seoul

When a British national dies in South Korea, the process involves additional steps due to the Korean police investigation protocol:

  1. Police investigation: Korean police automatically investigate all foreign deaths occurring outside a hospital. The body goes to a hospital morgue
  2. Prosecutor's release: The local prosecutor must issue a "Completion of Examination of Body" certificate (검시필증) before the body can be released
  3. Medical death certificate: Once released, the hospital issues the official certificate
  4. Translation and apostille: If the certificate is Korean-only, it must be officially translated. The FCDO maintains lists of registered translators in South Korea. Document legalization: MOFA Apostille Call Centre +82-2-6747-0404
  5. UK death registration: British families can optionally register the death with UK authorities to obtain a UK-style death certificate from the General Register Office

Canadian Citizens

Canadian families must notify several federal programs:

  • Social Insurance Number (SIN): Mail the deceased's SIN and proof of death to a Service Canada Centre to formally close the record
  • CRA and CPP/OAS: Contact the Canada Revenue Agency and pension programs immediately to halt payments and prevent overpayment liabilities
  • Credit bureaus: Submit a copy of the death certificate to Equifax and TransUnion Canada to prevent identity theft
  • Passport: Mail the valid passport to the Passport Program in Gatineau, Quebec, with the death certificate and a letter specifying whether to destroy or return it
