Cremation in Peru: Funeral Costs, Rules, and What Foreigners Need to Know

Funeral costs in Peru range from S/ 3,000 for a basic municipal burial to S/ 25,000+ for a full-service private cremation with international ash transfer. Foreign families without local knowledge routinely overpay — particularly when funeral homes sense urgency and linguistic isolation.

Cremation Rules in Peru

Cremation is legal and available in Peru's major cities, but it's more regulated than burial:

Required for cremation:

  • Written authorization from next-of-kin OR a pre-existing declaration by the deceased
  • The Medical Certificate of Death (must specify no autopsy required)
  • If the death is under criminal investigation, explicit prosecutor clearance is mandatory before cremation can proceed
  • Burial permit from the local municipality

Timing: Cremation typically happens 24-48 hours after death, once all permits are secured.

Important: If there's any chance the death will be investigated or if the cause of death was unusual, the Fiscalía (prosecutor's office) can block cremation indefinitely. In suspicious death cases, do not push for cremation — it can be viewed as evidence destruction.

Funeral Cost Breakdown

Service Cost Range (S/) Notes
Basic cremation S/ 3,500-S/ 8,000 Includes cremation and urn
Full-service funeral (chapel, coffin, transport) S/ 8,000-S/ 18,000 Private funeral homes in Lima
International repatriation package S/ 15,000-S/ 40,000 Embalming + hermetic casket + permits + cargo
Municipal cemetery burial S/ 2,000-S/ 5,000 Simplest option
Private cemetery plot (Lima) S/ 5,000-S/ 25,000+ Parque del Recuerdo, Campo Fe, etc.
Embalming only S/ 2,000-S/ 4,000 Required for transport or delayed burial

EsSalud Funeral Subsidy

If the deceased was an active employee or pensioner under EsSalud (Peru's social security health system), their family can claim a funeral expense reimbursement of up to S/ 2,070.

Requirements:

  • EsSalud Form 1040
  • Original, itemized funeral invoices in the claimant's name
  • Certified Death Act
  • Claimant's identification
  • Power of attorney (if claiming on behalf of another)

Deadline: Must file within 180 days (6 months) of death. Miss this window and the benefit is permanently forfeited.

SIS alternative: If the deceased was covered by SIS (Seguro Integral de Salud) rather than EsSalud, a flat S/ 1,000 funeral benefit is available — filed at a public health centre within 12 months.

Burial Permits and Municipal Regulations

Every burial in Peru requires a permiso de entierro (burial permit) issued by the municipality hosting the cemetery. The permit requires:

  • Registered Death Act from RENIEC
  • Medical Certificate confirming cause of death
  • Identification of the person arranging the burial

Peru's cemetery regulations are set at the municipal level, meaning rules vary by district. Lima's major cemeteries are private and handle most permitting internally. Outside Lima, expect to visit the municipal office in person.

Protecting Yourself from Overcharging

Funeral homes in Peru are private businesses with unregulated pricing. English-speaking families dealing with a death crisis are particularly vulnerable to inflated quotes.

Practical protections:

  • Request itemized quotes from at least two funeral homes before committing
  • Ask your embassy for their recommended funeral directors (these firms handle international cases regularly and have reputational incentives to charge fairly)
  • Distinguish between what's legally required (embalming for transport, sealed casket for flight) and what's optional (premium coffin, extended chapel time)
  • Payment for the funeral subsidy (EsSalud) only reimburses with original invoices — ensure everything is invoiced to the claiming family member

The Peru Expat Death Guide includes a funeral cost comparison worksheet, scripts for negotiating with funeral homes, and the complete EsSalud reimbursement process with form-by-form instructions.
