Can You Apply for Survivor Benefits Online?
Monthly Survivor Benefits: No Online Application
Monthly survivor benefit applications cannot be submitted through the my Social Security website. The separate $255 lump-sum death payment can be requested online through a my Social Security account. For monthly benefits, you must complete the process by phone or in person at a local Social Security office. SSA requires an interview to verify your identity, review original documents, and confirm the circumstances of the death.
Call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY: 1-800-325-0778) to schedule your interview. Phone lines are typically less congested early in the morning and later in the week — Wednesday through Friday tend to have shorter wait times than Monday and Tuesday.
The Protective Filing Date
During your first phone call to SSA — even before the actual interview — ask the agent to establish a protective filing date. This is critical. The protective filing date locks in the start date for your retroactive benefits, even if your formal interview doesn't happen for weeks.
Say this explicitly: "I want to establish a protective filing date for survivor benefits." Ask the agent to read back the exact date they've logged. Write it down. This date determines how far back your retroactive payments extend.
Without a protective filing date, retroactive benefits may be limited to six months before your actual application date, potentially costing you thousands in lost payments.
Documents You'll Need
Gather these before your interview. SSA requires certified originals — photocopies are rejected for vital records.
- Certified death certificate (the funeral home typically orders these; get 10-15 copies)
- Your Social Security number and the deceased's
- Certified marriage certificate (or divorce decree if applying as a surviving divorced spouse)
- Your birth certificate (and children's, if applying for dependent benefits)
- The deceased's W-2 forms or self-employment tax returns for the most recent year
- DD-214 military discharge papers if the deceased served before 1968
- Direct deposit information — your bank's routing number and your account number

What Happens at the Interview
The interview typically takes 30 to 60 minutes. The SSA claims representative will:
- Verify your identity and the death
- Review your original documents (they'll return them)
- Walk through Form SSA-10 or SSA-5
- Calculate your preliminary benefit amount
- Set up direct deposit
You can request a phone interview if traveling to an office is difficult. SSA will tell you how to submit original documents afterward; photocopies of vital records are not accepted.
Processing Timeline
After the interview, expect 4 to 12 weeks for SSA to process your claim and issue the first payment. Complex cases — especially those involving the GPO/WEP repeal, disputes over eligibility, or retroactive payment calculations — can take longer.
Your first payment will typically include retroactive benefits from the protective filing date (or up to six months before your application, whichever applies). Subsequent payments arrive on the second, third, or fourth Wednesday of each month, depending on the deceased's birth date.
The Social Security Survivor Benefits Navigator includes an interview preparation checklist, pre-drafted call scripts, and a document retrieval tracker so you walk into the appointment fully prepared.
