Child Death Benefits UK: What Stops, What Continues, and How to Notify

Some Benefits Continue — Others Stop Immediately

The UK benefits system after a child's death is not a single switch that turns everything off at once. Some payments continue for a run-on period to cushion the financial shock. Others terminate the day your child dies, sometimes with consequences you would not expect — like losing your car.

Knowing which is which prevents overpayments you would have to repay, and ensures you claim everything you are entitled to during the transition.

Child Benefit: 8-Week Run-On

Child Benefit payments continue for eight weeks after your child's death. You do not need to do anything to trigger this run-on — it applies automatically once you notify the Child Benefit Office of the death. The same eight-week run-on applies to Guardian's Allowance if you were receiving it.

You should notify the Child Benefit Office as soon as you reasonably can. You can use Tell Us Once, call the HMRC Bereavement Helpline on 0300 322 9620, or write to the Child Benefit Office, PO Box 1, Newcastle upon Tyne NE88 1AA. You will need your full name, National Insurance number, and your child's full name, date of birth, and date of death.

If you delay notification and payments continue beyond the eight-week run-on, you will be required to repay the overpayment. Registering the death alone may not notify every benefits agency; use Tell Us Once where available or contact the relevant office directly.

Disability Living Allowance: Stops Immediately

If your child was receiving Disability Living Allowance (DLA), it stops on the day of death. There is no run-on period for DLA.

This creates an immediate practical problem for families who relied on DLA to fund a Motability vehicle. Motability-leased vehicles — including wheelchair-accessible cars — must be returned. If your family's only vehicle was a Motability lease, the death of your child can leave you without transport at the exact moment you most need it.

Contact Motability directly to confirm the return arrangements.

If your child was receiving the Scottish Child Disability Payment instead of DLA, the same immediate termination applies, but with a 12-week run-on for any associated Carer Support Payment (longer than the eight-week Carer's Allowance run-on in England and Wales).

Carer's Allowance: 8-Week Run-On

If you were receiving Carer's Allowance because you cared for your child for at least 35 hours per week, payments continue for eight weeks after their death. In Scotland, the Carer Support Payment continues for 12 weeks.

Universal Credit Adjustments

If you are on Universal Credit, several elements change:

  • Child element: continues for the rest of the monthly assessment period in which your child died, plus the two subsequent months
  • Childcare costs element: follows the same timeline
  • Carer element: continues for the rest of the monthly assessment period in which your child died, plus the next two months
  • Housing element: if the death results in a "spare bedroom" under the bedroom tax rules, the reduction is delayed for 12 months, provided you remain in the same property

Report the death to Universal Credit through your online journal as soon as possible. The system will not automatically adjust — it requires your notification.

Other Benefits to Check

  • Tax credit notices: Tax credits ended on 5 April 2025. If HMRC sends an Annual Review or overpayment notice, follow the deadline in the letter to correct it or contact HMRC.
  • Council Tax Reduction: If your household receives this means-tested support, ask your local authority whether the change affects your eligibility; local schemes may consider income, benefits, and the number of children in your household.
  • Free school meals and food support: Tell the school and the relevant scheme about the death and check whether support continues for surviving children. Healthy Start is not based on school enrolment; Scotland uses Best Start Foods instead.

The Financial Impact Is Real

A 2022 report by Together for Short Lives found that the financial cost of a child's death extends well beyond funeral expenses. Families lose benefit income, face return-to-work challenges, and often carry medical or care-related debts from the period before the child's death. The immediate loss of DLA and the associated vehicle magnifies this for families with disabled children.
