What Cremation Ashes Actually Are

  • Carbon: approximately 1–4% — this is significantly less than the 18.5% carbon in a living body

That last point matters more than it might seem at first.

Why the Carbon Content Matters

Several creative memorial companies depend on carbon extracted from cremation ashes to create their products. Memorial diamond labs like Eterneva claim to use carbon from your loved one's remains to grow a lab diamond through high-pressure, high-temperature synthesis (HPHT).

The problem: standard flame cremation reduces the body's carbon content dramatically. Independent forensic analyses have found that the carbon remaining in cremation ashes can be as low as 1% — barely enough for reliable extraction, and potentially not enough to constitute a meaningful portion of the finished diamond.

For other creative memorials — glass art, reef balls, paintings, vinyl records — the carbon content doesn't matter. These processes physically incorporate the remains as-is, without extracting specific elements.

How Much Ash a Cremation Produces

The amount of remains depends on the person's skeletal size, not their body weight. A large-framed person produces more ash than a small-framed person, regardless of how much they weighed at death.

What This Means for Dividing Ashes

Understanding the volume helps when planning to divide remains among family members or across multiple memorial types. A standard adult cremation produces enough material for:

  • A space burial capsule (1–7 grams — a tiny fraction)
  • Multiple keepsake urns or cremation jewelry pieces
  • A memorial reef ball (accepts all or a portion)
  • Glass art or painting (a small portion)
  • Vinyl (approximately 1 teaspoon)
  • Traditional urn interment or scattering for the remainder

One adult's remains can realistically accommodate three or four different memorials simultaneously. This is a practical consideration that most memorial providers mention only in passing — they each want the family to choose their product exclusively.

The Identification Disc

Crematories commonly include a metal identification disc (sometimes called a cremation tag or ID chip) stamped with a unique number that links the remains to the cremation case. The disc is designed to survive the cremation process and is typically placed with the ashes.

Cremation ashes are bone mineral, not carbon-rich material. They're durable, chemically stable, and safe to handle, store, ship, or incorporate into creative memorials. The main thing worth knowing is the carbon limitation — it affects only memorial diamonds and doesn't apply to other options.
