Compare that to a traditional cremation with embalming, viewing, and a memorial service, which costs $5,500–$7,000 or more.

What Is Included

4. Cremation occurs after required death registration and medical examiner or coroner clearance; timing varies by jurisdiction and provider.
5. The cremated remains are returned to the family in a temporary container.

Choosing direct cremation does not mean skipping a farewell. Many families hold a memorial service, celebration of life, or scattering ceremony days, weeks, or months later — without the time pressure and expense of coordinating it through a funeral home.

A memorial at someone's home, a park, a restaurant, or a community hall costs a fraction of a funeral home service. The remains can be present or not. There is no timeline for deciding what to do with the ashes.

What to Ask the Provider

• "Is your quoted price all-inclusive?" Some providers advertise a low cremation fee but add charges for transport, medical examiner fees, and the temporary container separately.
• "What is the total out-the-door cost with no additions?" This forces a clear answer.
• "Do you handle the death certificate filing and how many certified copies are included?" Most providers file the certificate but charge per copy.
