Embalming Alternatives: How to Preserve a Body Without Chemicals

Embalming Is Usually Optional

For many home funerals, families can choose burial or cremation without embalming. The FTC Funeral Rule explicitly states that funeral homes cannot tell families embalming is required by law when it isn't — and it often is not.

Requirements can still apply to interstate transport, communicable disease, or holding remains beyond a state-prescribed timeframe. For example, Arkansas and Colorado require embalming or refrigeration after 24 hours, Minnesota after 72 hours, and North Dakota does not accept refrigeration as a substitute for embalming in the cited timing situations. Check the rules in both the originating and receiving jurisdictions before moving remains.

Funeral homes push embalming because it's a high-margin service ($883–$975 in the research estimates) and because it makes extended viewing possible. But for families choosing a home funeral, a natural burial, or a direct cremation, embalming adds cost and chemicals without adding value.

Alternative 1: Dry Ice

Dry ice (solid carbon dioxide at -109°F) is one of the most common non-chemical preservation methods for home funerals. It can support a multi-day vigil when managed and replenished according to the cooling protocol.

How it works: Wrapped blocks of dry ice placed under the torso and over the abdomen cool the body's core, slowing bacterial activity to near zero. The body stays cool to the touch but doesn't freeze solid — ice is positioned with insulating layers (paper bags, towels, foam pads) that distribute cold evenly.

What you need: 30 pounds initially, then 10–20 pounds daily. Cost: $50–$150 for a three-day vigil.

Key precaution: Dry ice sublimates into CO2 gas. In an enclosed room, this can deplete oxygen. Always ventilate — keep a window cracked or run a fan.

Alternative 2: Polymer Cooling Sheets

Techni-Ice and similar polymer sheets are water-activated panels that freeze solid and release cold gradually over 3–4 hours. They're the safest option for households with children and pets.

How it works: Freeze 12 sheets, wrap them in pillowcases, and place them under the lower back and over the abdomen. Rotate sheets every 3–4 hours (6 on, 6 refreezing at all times).

Cost: $40–$60 for a reusable set.

Trade-off: Less cooling power than dry ice, so they work best in a room kept below 65°F. For vigils beyond three days or in warm climates, dry ice is more reliable.

Alternative 3: Refrigeration

Commercial refrigeration units designed for body storage can be rented in some areas, though availability is limited. More practically, some families use a climate-controlled room — a basement or garage in winter — combined with supplemental cooling from ice packs or dry ice.

Dedicated cooling cradles (like the "Flexmort" system) are portable cooling units designed specifically for home funerals. They're expensive to buy ($2,000–$4,000) but some funeral homes and death doulas rent them by the day.

What About Natural Decomposition?

For very short timeframes (12–24 hours from death to disposition), some families choose not to embalm, but state rules and cooling needs still apply. A cool room alone should not be treated as a universal preservation method.

This is more common in traditions that emphasize rapid disposition — Jewish custom aims for burial within 24 hours, and Islamic practice also encourages prompt burial.

State Timelines to Know

Most states have no mandatory preservation timeline at all. Examples of state-specific rules include:

  • Arkansas: Embalm or refrigerate after 24 hours; neither is required for up to 48 hours if cremation is planned
  • Colorado, Kansas, Texas: Embalm or refrigerate after 24 hours
  • Iowa: No preservation for up to 72 hours, then refrigerate at 38°F–42°F for up to 72 additional hours
  • Virginia: After 48 hours
  • Minnesota: After 72 hours (dry ice limited to 4 days, refrigeration to 6)
  • Nevada: Refrigerate after 24 hours only if remains are held for cremation
  • Missouri: No preservation requirement for home funeral families, subject to infectious-disease rules
  • North Dakota: Disposition within 8 days; embalm if remains don't reach final destination within 24 hours or disposition is not completed within 48 hours

Where a state permits refrigeration or other cooling, non-chemical methods may satisfy the preservation requirement. North Dakota, for example, does not accept refrigeration as a substitute for embalming in the situations described above, so check the state-specific rule rather than assuming that any cooling method is sufficient.
