How to Notify Government Agencies of Death
Government agencies don't share a central death notification system in the United States. The funeral home typically reports the death to the Social Security Administration, but benefits agencies, the DMV, the VA, and state offices may require separate notifications. The IRS has its own fiduciary and tax-filing procedures. If notifications lag, the estate risks overpayment clawbacks, continued benefit fraud exposure, and an active driver's license that identity thieves can exploit.
Social Security Administration (SSA)
The funeral home usually handles the initial SSA notification, but the executor should verify. Call 1-800-772-1213 — you cannot report a death to Social Security online.
What to have ready: The deceased's Social Security number, date of birth, and date of death.
Key rules:
- Social Security benefits are not payable for the month of death. If the person died in September, the October payment (which covers September) must be returned.
- Direct deposits received after the month of death must be returned to the SSA. Contact the bank to have them returned.
- A qualifying spouse or child may receive a one-time lump-sum death payment of $255. Apply by calling SSA or visiting a local office; SSA identifies the application as Form SSA-8.
- If benefits were due to the deceased for months before the month of death, a surviving spouse or eligible family member can claim them using Form SSA-1724.
UK equivalent: The Tell Us Once service notifies the Department for Work and Pensions, HMRC, DVLA, the Passport Office, and local councils — all in a single registration at the time of death. Get the reference number from the registrar and use it within 28 days.
Canada: Call Service Canada at 1-800-277-9914 to stop Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and Old Age Security (OAS) payments. Submit Form RC4111 to the Canada Revenue Agency to update the tax profile.
Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV)
Cancel the deceased person's driver's license at your state's DMV office. This is a frequently overlooked step, but an active license in a dead person's name is one of the most commonly used documents in identity fraud.
What to bring: A certified death certificate and proof of your executor authority. Some states accept a walk-in visit; others require a written request.
Vehicle titles: If the deceased owned a vehicle, the DMV handles title transfers as well. Bring the current title, death certificate, and your Letters Testamentary. Transfer the vehicle into the estate's name or directly to the beneficiary, depending on your state's process and whether the estate is going through probate.
Veterans Affairs (VA)
If the deceased was a veteran, call the VA at 1-800-827-1000 to report the death and ask about available benefits.
Potential benefits:
- Burial and memorial benefits. For qualifying service-connected deaths on or after September 11, 2001, the maximum burial allowance is $2,000. For a qualifying non-service-connected death on or after October 1, 2026, VA lists a $1,032 burial allowance and a $1,032 plot allowance. Eligible veterans may also receive a burial flag and Presidential Memorial Certificate.
- National cemetery burial. Veterans who meet VA service and discharge requirements may be eligible for burial in a national cemetery at no cost, including the gravesite, opening/closing of the grave, and a headstone or marker. Some spouses, surviving spouses, and dependent children may also qualify.
- Survivor benefits. The surviving spouse may be eligible for Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) if the death was service-connected, or for the VA Survivors Pension if they meet income thresholds.
- Education benefits. A service member must request transfer of Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits while still serving. If the service member died, a spouse or child may instead qualify for Survivors' and Dependents' Educational Assistance (DEA) or the Fry Scholarship, depending on VA eligibility rules.
Documents to have ready: The veteran's DD-214 (discharge papers), Social Security number, and a certified death certificate.

Other Federal Agencies
IRS: A fiduciary who acts on behalf of a taxpayer before the IRS must file Form 56 to notify it of the fiduciary relationship. The personal representative files the deceased's final Form 1040 if required; the estate must file Form 1041 if it has gross annual income of $600 or more or another filing condition applies.
Medicare and Medicaid: Medicare coverage ends automatically when SSA records the death. If the deceased was on Medicaid, contact the state Medicaid office — some states have estate recovery programs that file claims against the estate for services provided.
Federal employee benefits: If the deceased was a federal retiree, notify the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) to stop pension payments and initiate survivor benefit claims. Military retirees go through the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS).
State-Level Agencies
- State tax authority — notify them of the death and ask about state inheritance or estate tax requirements
- Voter registration — contact the county board of elections to remove the deceased from voter rolls
- Professional licensing boards — if the deceased held a professional license (medical, legal, real estate), notify the issuing board
Australia's Centralized Option
Australia's Death Notification Service (ADNS) validates the death through the state registry of Births, Deaths, and Marriages, then lets you notify multiple participating agencies and institutions — including the ATO, Services Australia (Centrelink, Medicare, Child Support), the Department of Veterans' Affairs, and the Australian Electoral Commission — in one session.
The Notifying Everyone — Master Template Kit maps out every government agency notification with pre-written scripts and letters, organized by the timeline phase when each one should happen — so you're not guessing which agencies to call or what to say.
