What Full-Body Repatriation Actually Involves

Bringing a loved one's remains from the UK to Jamaica is a logistical operation that crosses two legal systems, multiple government offices, and at least one international airline's cargo department. The Document Chain

Every document must be obtained in sequence. Missing one stalls the entire chain.

From the UK side:

• Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (MCCD), issued by the attending doctor and reviewed by the medical examiner
• Registered death certificate from the local registrar (order 10–12 certified copies)
• Embalming Certificate from a qualified UK embalmer (mandatory for international air transport)
• Out of England Certificate (Form 103) from HM Coroner, or a Furth of Scotland letter from the Procurator Fiscal

From the Jamaican side:

• Transit Permit from the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW), at a flat fee of J$10,000

The Out of England process has a built-in delay: the funeral director files Form 104 with the coroner, and four clear working days must pass before the coroner can release the body. In urgent cases — such as religious obligations — the coroner may waive this period, but it requires a formal request.

Preparation of Remains

International airlines and Jamaican sanitary codes require full arterial embalming and a hermetically sealed container. The standard approach is a zinc-lined wooden coffin, though some funeral directors use a CadSeal containment film system inside a shipping casket instead. The outer coffin is wrapped in protective packaging — hessian cloth or heavy-duty bubble wrap — to prevent damage in cargo.

Standard shipping packages are calculated for weights up to 150 kg, including the coffin. Remains exceeding this weight incur additional cargo fees.

Airline Cargo Routes

Two carriers operate direct UK-to-Jamaica cargo routes for human remains:

The Jamaica Arrival

The receiving funeral home submits the UK death certificate, embalming certificate, Out of England certificate, a Free from Infection certificate, the deceased's passport, and the flight itinerary. The permit cannot be obtained by an individual for whole remains — only a registered funeral home.

Many online sources still list outdated Transit Permit fees of J$3,000 or J$6,000. The current rate, verified as of January 2026, is J$10,000 for both remains and ashes.

Weekend and Holiday Timing

UK registrar offices, coroner's offices, and the FCDO don't operate on weekends or bank holidays. A death on a Friday afternoon before a bank holiday weekend can delay registration and coronial release by three to four extra days, extending mortuary storage costs.

Factor this into your timeline. If a death occurs mid-week, you have a realistic chance of completing UK-side paperwork within 7 to 10 working days. Deaths near weekends or holidays push the full timeline to 14 to 21 working days.
