The Process at Hamad Medical Corporation

Most deaths in Qatar are processed through HMC, which serves as both the primary hospital and the hub for death-related administrative work. The Unified Humanitarian Services Office, located behind the HMC mortuary, consolidates representatives from the Ministry of Public Health, Ministry of Interior, and police under one roof.

Bring ten printed copies of each: the deceased's Qatar ID (QID), passport, sponsor's ID, and next-of-kin documents. The Humanitarian Services Office processes death registration, police clearances, and health authority approvals in sequence from this location.

Embassy Clearances

Contact the deceased's embassy or consulate as soon as possible. The embassy:

• Verifies the deceased's identity
• Cancels the passport
• Issues the No Objection Certificate (NOC)

The NOC is mandatory before Qatari authorities will release the remains for international transport.

Embalming and Casket

The volunteer team at HMC performs arterial chemical embalming at no charge. They also provide a basic wood casket free of cost. For international air transport, the body must be placed in a hermetically sealed zinc- or lead-lined inner coffin (encased in the wooden outer crate) — this is an aviation regulation, not a Qatari one.

If the free wood casket doesn't meet the zinc-lining specification for the destination country's receiving airport, you'll need to arrange the zinc insert separately. Repatriation service providers in Doha can supply this, but get a quote in writing before committing.

Cargo Flight Booking

Air cargo rates from Qatar vary by destination and weight. They're calculated per kilogram of the total shipping crate, and long-haul routes (South Asia, Southeast Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa) are significantly more expensive than Gulf or Middle Eastern destinations.

As with the UAE, the airline typically requires a confirmed cargo booking before the mortuary will schedule the embalming — the two need to be coordinated within a 12–24 hour window for the preservation to be effective at the destination.

Employer Obligations

Qatar's labor law requires the employer to manage the administrative process and cover costs when a sponsored employee dies. If the family isn't present in Qatar, the employer must deposit end-of-service benefits and unpaid wages into the Family Court within fifteen days of the death for structured distribution to the heirs.

This is a legally enforceable obligation, but families abroad often don't know about it and employers don't always volunteer the information. If you're managing this from overseas, contact the embassy and ask them to confirm with the employer that the Family Court deposit has been made.

The Timeline

Expect 3–7 days from death to departure of the remains, depending on:

• How quickly the embassy issues the NOC
• Whether the death is classified as natural (faster) or requires forensic investigation (slower)
• Cargo flight availability to the destination
