But filing a death-related claim abroad is far more complex than a routine medical claim, and the documentation requirements are unforgiving.

What Repatriation Coverage Typically Includes

Most travel insurance policies with repatriation benefits cover the direct costs of returning the deceased's remains to the home country. This typically includes embalming and body preparation by a licensed Bestatter, the zinc-lined transport casket (Zinksarg), international air cargo fees, and the required permits and consular processing. Filing the Claim: Required Documents

Insurers require comprehensive documentation, and missing a single document can delay or void the claim. The typical documentation package includes:

• The Todesbescheinigung (medical death certificate) stating the cause of death
• A medical report from the treating hospital or physician if the death occurred during medical care
• Itemized invoices from the Bestatter for all funeral preparation and transport costs
• The Air Waybill (AWB) documenting the cargo shipment
• Receipts for any companion flight tickets purchased for family escorts
• Proof that the claim was reported promptly and within the policy's stated notification window

The Notification Deadline

Families should notify the insurer immediately. Late notification can affect a claim depending on the policy terms, even if the claim is otherwise valid.

The notification should be made by phone to the insurer's emergency assistance line, followed by written confirmation. The insurer's case manager may assign an approved funeral director or cargo agent — if they do, using the insurer's approved provider streamlines the reimbursement process significantly.

When Insurance Falls Short

Even with a valid claim, travel insurance rarely covers the full cost of cross-border estate administration — inheritance proceedings, sworn translations, German probate court fees, and Turkish tax filings are all outside the scope of travel insurance.
