Where to Store LPA Documents in England

Once the Office of the Public Guardian stamps and returns your registered LPA, that physical document is the registered paper instrument. If it is lost or destroyed, the OPG can provide an office copy for £35, so a fresh LPA application is not required solely to replace the document. Storing it properly still matters more than most people realise.

Keep the Original in a Fireproof Location

The stamped original should go somewhere secure and fire-resistant — a home safe bolted to the floor, a fireproof document box, or a bank safe deposit box. Avoid filing cabinets, desk drawers, or folders that could be damaged by water, fire, or a house clearance.

If you use a bank safe deposit box, make sure at least one attorney knows which branch holds it and has the access details. An LPA locked in a box that nobody else can open defeats its purpose.

Tell Your Attorneys and Key People Where It Is

Storage is pointless if the people who need the LPA cannot find it when it matters. Write down the exact location and give that note to every named attorney, your certificate provider, and at least one trusted family member.

Some families keep a simple information sheet in a kitchen drawer or with their will, listing where the LPA original is stored, the registration reference number, and the names of the attorneys. This ensures that in a medical emergency — a stroke, a fall, a sudden hospital admission — the attorney can locate the document within hours rather than days.

Use the "Use an LPA" Digital Service for Day-to-Day Access

You do not need to carry the physical LPA to every bank meeting or GP appointment. The OPG's online "Use an LPA" service lets you generate a 13-character access code, which allows banks, care homes, and other institutions to verify your attorneys' powers digitally.

Generate a unique access code for each organisation that needs to see the LPA. Each code is valid for 50 days and can be renewed as needed. This avoids the risk of losing or damaging the original while transporting it between appointments.

Certified Copies for Institutions That Insist on Paper

Some banks and solicitors still want a paper copy rather than using the digital service. You can certify a photocopy of the registered LPA yourself — while the donor still has capacity — by writing on each page: "I certify this is a true and complete copy of the corresponding page of the original lasting power of attorney," signing and dating every page, and adding "I certify this is a true and complete copy of the lasting power of attorney" on the final page.

A solicitor or a person authorised to carry out notarial activities can also certify copies; they may charge a fee.

Do Not Store the LPA with Your Will

It is tempting to bundle the LPA with your will in one envelope, but they serve different purposes at different times. The LPA is needed while the donor is alive; the will is needed after death. Storing them together in a solicitor's vault can create delays if the attorney needs the LPA urgently but the solicitor's office is closed.
