Wyoming Vehicle Transfer on Death

That changed in 2025 when the Wyoming Legislature passed SF0039 (Enrolled Act 40), creating a formal beneficiary designation system for motor vehicle titles. Now you can name someone to inherit your vehicle automatically at death, completely bypassing the probate process.

How the Vehicle Beneficiary Designation Works

Under SF0039, Wyoming residents can execute a beneficiary designation form for their motor vehicle title. The form is filed with the County Treasurer or DMV and indicates the present owner's intention to transfer ownership to a named beneficiary immediately upon their death.

The key features mirror real estate Transfer on Death deeds:

• The owner retains full control of the vehicle during their lifetime
• The beneficiary has no ownership rights until the owner dies
• The owner can change or revoke the designation at any time
• No probate court involvement is needed for the transfer

This is especially valuable in Wyoming where ranch trucks, work vehicles, ATVs, and equipment can represent significant value. Before SF0039, even a $5,000 pickup required some form of estate proceeding to transfer title.

Setting Up the Designation

To create a vehicle beneficiary designation:

1. Obtain the beneficiary designation form from your County Treasurer's office or the Wyoming DMV
2. Complete the form with the vehicle information (VIN, year, make, model) and the full legal name of your chosen beneficiary
3. Sign the form and submit it with your vehicle title documents

Why This Matters for Estate Planning

Limitations
