Air Force Funeral Honors Request: Steps, Timeline, and What to Expect

The Notice Window the Air Force Requires

The Department of the Air Force requests at least seven days' advance notice to guarantee a funeral honors detail, with a strict 72-hour minimum processing window. That's tighter than it sounds — families who choose cremation and delay scheduling often find themselves pushing up against this cutoff right when they finalize the service date.

Your funeral director initiates the request. They contact the Air Force Base Command nearest to the cemetery or funeral home, submitting the veteran's DD Form 214 to confirm honorable discharge and Air Force service. If interment is at a national cemetery, the funeral director coordinates scheduling and honors through the National Cemetery Scheduling Office; VA Form 40-10007 is the separate pre-need eligibility application.

Standard Two-Person Honors

Every Air Force veteran and retiree discharged under honorable conditions receives, at minimum, a two-person uniformed detail. At least one member must be from the Air Force (or Space Force, which falls under Air Force Casualty Command for honors purposes). The detail performs:

• Ceremonial folding of the burial flag into the triangular tricorn shape
• Presentation of the flag to the primary next of kin with the standardized presidential script: "On behalf of the President of the United States, the United States Air Force, and a grateful Nation, please accept this flag as a symbol of our appreciation for your loved one's honorable and faithful service."
• Sounding of Taps — via live bugler or high-quality electronic recording on a ceremonial bugle

No rifle volleys, no marching unit, no military band at this level. The entire ceremony is dignified and precisely choreographed, but compact.

Full Honors With Escort

Full military honors are reserved for Air Force members at the grade of E-9, CW-4/CW-5, O-4 and above, active-duty deaths, Medal of Honor recipients, and POWs. The expanded detail includes a casket team, a firing party rendering three rifle volleys, a marching escort element, and potentially a military band.

At Arlington National Cemetery, full honors ceremonies can include a flyover (the "missing man formation") for certain qualifying ranks and service records, though this requires coordination through Air Force District of Washington and is subject to aircraft and crew availability.

Space Force Veterans

The United States Space Force, established in 2019, operates under the Department of the Air Force. Space Force veterans and active-duty Guardians receive funeral honors through the same Air Force Casualty Command channels. The flag presentation uses the Space Force branch name in the presidential script.

Because the Space Force is young, most Space Force funerals currently involve members who transferred from the Air Force. The DD Form 214 will reflect the branch of service at separation — verify this before submitting the honors request.

When the Base Is Far Away

Air Force installations are spread across the country but concentrated in specific regions. If the funeral is in a rural area far from a base, the honors detail may need to travel hours. This is where the seven-day notice becomes critical — shorter notice may mean the base simply cannot assemble and transport a team in time.

In these situations, the Air Force can coordinate with local Veterans Service Organizations through the Authorized Provider Partnership Program to augment the detail. VFW or American Legion volunteers can serve as pallbearers, color guards, or a firing party, while the active-duty Air Force members handle the flag folding and presentation.
