Air India Cargo Human Remains Rate — Gulf to India

When a family needs to bring remains home from the Gulf, Air India Cargo is usually the first call — it operates the most direct routes between major GCC airports and Indian cities, and its flat-rate pricing for human remains cargo is significantly cheaper than most commercial freight alternatives. Here is what the rates are, what the airline requires before booking, and the restrictions that catch families off guard.

Air Cargo Rates by Country

Air India Cargo charges fixed rates for human remains on the UAE and Saudi Arabia routes, not a per-kilogram cargo rate; Qatar Airways quotes its own human-remains tariff for Qatar:

  • UAE to India: AED 1,500 for adults, AED 750 for children under 12
  • Saudi Arabia to India: SAR 2,200 flat rate
  • Qatar to India: Qatar Airways human-remains tariff, quoted by the cargo desk

These rates cover the cargo freight only. In the UAE, additional handling fees (airport surcharges, customs processing, casket transfer from the airline ramp) typically add AED 300–1,000 depending on the airport. Qatar Airways also processes human remains cargo from Doha, with booking handled through Counter 8 at the Humanitarian Services Office behind Hamad Hospital.

Mandatory Documentation Before Booking

Air India Cargo cannot generate the Air Waybill (AWB) or allocate cargo space until the following documents are in hand:

  1. eCARe portal clearance — the electronic health clearance from India's Airport Health Organization at the destination airport. The issuing airline cannot generate the Air Waybill or allocate cargo space for the casket without it
  2. Embalming Certificate — confirming chemical preservation at a certified government mortuary
  3. Coffin/Sealing Certificate — confirming the remains are in a hermetically sealed, zinc-lined wooden shipping casket
  4. Consular NOC — the repatriation No Objection Certificate from the Indian Embassy or Consulate
  5. Police clearance — confirming no pending criminal investigation

The casket itself must be labeled with the deceased's full name, destination airport in India, a "This Way Up" orientation indicator, and head-side markings.

Infectious Disease Restrictions

Under Rule 41 of the Indian Aircraft Public Health Rules 1954, remains of individuals who died from yellow fever, plague, anthrax, or glanders are strictly prohibited from entering India unless cremated and transported as ashes in a sealed urn.

Deaths from Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, or HIV are permitted for standard casket transport, provided the remains are hermetically sealed and the casket is marked as bio-hazardous.

Practical Booking Tips

The cargo desk at the origin airport processes bookings, not the passenger ticketing counter. In Qatar, the HSO's Qatar Airways counter handles the entire manifest directly — families do not need to visit the airport separately.

eCARe clearance is the bottleneck: the portal's SLA is 48 hours, though most natural-death cases clear within 12 hours. If eCARe clearance is delayed, the airline hold on the cargo space can lapse. Ask the cargo desk to flag the booking as pending-clearance so you do not lose the allocation.
