Why Airlines Are Strict About Human Remains Cargo

Confirm MASkargo's current checklist before booking; expect to provide the JPN death certificate, embalming and coffin-sealing certificates, and any required consular transit documents before final acceptance.

Aircraft type and cargo limits determine whether a casket can be accepted; confirm the dimensions when the booking is made. Pricing varies by total weight and container dimensions.

AirAsia Teleport: Budget Carrier Rules

AirAsia's cargo arm, Teleport, accepts human remains on approved routes but with tighter restrictions:

• One HUM consignment per aircraft — only one set of remains per flight
• Pre-clearance required — casket dimensions and total weight must be approved by Teleport Planners at maa_cargoops@airasia.com before any booking is confirmed
• Aircraft cargo limits mean maximum casket dimensions must be confirmed in advance

When to choose Teleport: The KL–Jakarta route may offer more daily frequencies at lower cargo rates. If the casket fits within their dimensional limits, it's a viable budget option.

Garuda Indonesia: Receiving-Side Requirements

Garuda Indonesia operates from the Indonesian end and has specific receiving protocols:

• The receiving party (family or their agent) must submit all documentation to the destination Port Health Authority immediately upon arrival
• A certificate confirming the remains are free from highly infectious diseases is required in addition to the standard embalming certificate
• Confirm with Garuda's cargo desk how customs and quarantine clearance will be handled at the Indonesian arrival airport

What the Funeral Director Handles vs. What the Family Handles

The funeral director manages embalming, casket preparation, packaging to IATA standards, local transit permits, and airline booking logistics. They issue the embalming certificate and coffin sealing certificate that every airline requires.

The family (or their representative) handles the document pipeline that supports the booking: the JPN death certificate, Wisma Putra attestation, Indonesian Embassy legalization, and any consular transit permit from KBRI.
