When a larger-bodied person dies, the family faces a sizing problem that funeral homes often handle poorly — either by not mentioning the issue until the last moment or by steering families toward the most expensive options without explaining the alternatives.

The Sizing Threshold

Standard adult caskets (84 × 28 × 23 inches, interior width 23–24 inches) accommodate individuals up to about 350 pounds. Beyond that weight — or if the funeral home's measurements show the standard interior will not accommodate the person — an oversized casket may be needed.

Oversized burial vault. A standard vault's 30-inch interior can't hold a 33-inch casket. Oversized vaults cost $500 to $2,000 more than standard models and may need to be special-ordered.

Second cemetery plot. Caskets 36 inches and wider don't fit in a standard single plot (36 inches wide). The cemetery may require purchasing an adjacent plot, which can double the plot cost — adding $1,000 to $5,000+ depending on location.

Equipment. Not every funeral home has equipment rated for heavier-duty lowering. Some may charge additional fees for specialized transportation or lowering devices.

Total additional cost for a bariatric burial can reach $3,000 to $8,000 above what a standard-size burial would cost.

How to Get the Right Size

The funeral home should take body measurements, but it helps to know the person's approximate weight and build:

• Under 350 lbs and within the standard casket's measured interior — standard casket
• 350–500 lbs — 28" or 29" oversize (critical advantage: these still fit a standard vault and single plot)
• Over 500 lbs, or if measurements show a 28- or 29-inch model will not fit — 33"+ (triggers vault upgrade and possibly a second plot)

When in doubt, go one size up. The 28" and 29" oversize models cost modestly more than standard but avoid the vault-and-plot cascade entirely. This is the most important call to get right.
