Standard Casket Dimensions — Size Chart, Weight Limits, and Vault Fit
Getting the wrong casket size creates a cascade of problems — from a casket that can't close properly to one that doesn't fit the cemetery's burial vault. Here are the actual measurements you need.
Standard Adult Casket
A standard adult steel casket commonly measures:
- Exterior: 84 inches long × 28 inches wide × 23 inches high (7 feet × 2.3 feet × 1.9 feet)
- Interior bed width: 23 to 24 inches
- Weight capacity: Up to 350 pounds
This size comfortably fits individuals up to about 6 feet 5 inches tall and 350 pounds. It fits inside a standard 30-inch-wide burial vault and a standard single cemetery plot (36 inches wide × 96 inches long).

The jump from a 29-inch to a 33-inch casket is the critical threshold. At 33 inches and wider, you move from a standard burial vault to an oversized one, and you may need to purchase a second adjacent cemetery plot. Those two additions can add $2,000 to $5,000 or more to total burial costs.
How to Choose the Right Size
Measure the person, not the casket. The funeral home can provide body measurements, or you can estimate from the person's height and weight:
- Height under 6'5", weight under 350 lbs, and fit confirmed by measurements — standard casket
- Weight 350–500 lbs — oversize 28" or 29" (still fits a standard vault)
- Weight over 500 lbs, or if the funeral home's measurements show a 28- or 29-inch model will not fit — oversize 33" or larger (triggers vault and possibly plot upgrades)
When in doubt, size up. A person who fits in a smaller casket will also fit in a larger one. A person who doesn't fit in the one you bought creates a problem that can't be solved the morning of the service.

Vault Compatibility
Most traditional cemeteries require an outer burial container — either a grave liner or a sealed burial vault. Standard vaults have interior dimensions of roughly 30 inches wide by 86 inches long. Any casket 29 inches or narrower fits.
Call the cemetery before ordering. Ask for their vault interior dimensions in writing. If you need an oversized vault, confirm availability — not every cemetery stocks them, and special-order vaults may take days to arrive.
The Height Factor
Standard casket height is 23 inches. If the deceased is tall, the concern isn't usually height but length — and the standard 84-inch (7-foot) exterior accommodates most people up to 6'5". For taller individuals, some manufacturers offer extended-length caskets at 86 to 90 inches, but these are special orders.
