Three Ways to Source a Bugler

The sounding of the Last Post is one of the most emotionally powerful moments in a military funeral. Sourcing the person (or recording) to deliver it is one of the first ceremonial decisions families face. There are three realistic options in the UK, each with different costs, lead times, and availability.

Option 1: An Official MoD Bugler

Veterans who completed full pensionable service or earned an operational service medal may be entitled to a Royal Marine or regimental bugler at public expense. This is arranged through the Single Service Tasking Authority.

The catch is availability. Official buglers are serving musicians with operational commitments, and the approval process takes time. Your funeral director or Visiting Officer (for serving personnel) submits the request, but there is no guarantee one will be assigned — particularly for funerals at short notice or in locations far from military bases.

When an official MoD bugler is sourced through a formal band request, the cost has been reported at up to £367 plus VAT. This is covered by the MoD for qualifying veterans, but the figure gives context for why private alternatives exist.

Option 2: A Private Veteran Bugler

Networks of retired military musicians and civilian brass players offer bugling services for funerals across the UK. The typical cost is around £75 plus travel expenses, making this the most common choice for veteran families who want a live performance.

To find a private bugler:

• Ask your local Royal British Legion branch — they often maintain a list of available buglers in the area
• Contact the Royal Naval Association or the relevant regimental association
• Search for veteran bugler networks online — several operate nationally

Book early. A bugler who serves a wide geographic area may have limited availability, and a military funeral's compressed planning timeline means you cannot afford to start looking in the final days.

Option 3: A High-Quality Recording

Crematorium media systems — including platforms like Wesley or Obitus — can play recorded music during the service. High-quality recordings of the Last Post and Reveille (or the Rouse) are available through these systems at no additional cost. Your funeral director arranges this as part of the standard service booking.

Recorded versions carry no stigma. They are widely used and widely accepted. The sound quality through modern crematorium speakers is good, and the timing can be precisely coordinated with the clergy's cues.

For church or graveside services without a built-in sound system, a portable speaker with a pre-loaded recording achieves the same effect, though the acoustic quality depends on the venue.

Which Option Should You Choose?

The decision usually comes down to availability and timeline:

• If the veteran clearly qualifies and the funeral is more than two weeks away, request the official MoD bugler, subject to approval by the Single Service Tasking Authority. Have a backup plan.
• If timing is tight or eligibility is uncertain, contact a private bugler through the RBL network immediately.
• If no live bugler can be secured in time, a recorded version is a dignified and entirely appropriate alternative.

Many families hedge by requesting an official bugler while simultaneously booking a private backup. If the MoD assigns one, you cancel the private booking.

Getting the Timing Right on the Day

Whether live or recorded, the bugler (or recording operator) needs to know the exact ceremony sequence. The Last Post is sounded immediately after the committal words. The Rouse or Reveille breaks the silence after the Exhortation. A missed cue — a bugler who starts too early or a recording that plays during the wrong pause — undercuts the entire ceremony.
