Cremation Process Explained: What Happens Step by Step
Most families who choose cremation have only a vague idea of what the process involves. The funeral industry has historically kept the mechanical details behind closed doors, which leaves people filling the gaps with anxiety. Here's what actually happens, step by step, from the moment the body arrives at the cremation facility to the moment the remains are returned.
Identification and Preparation
When the body arrives at the cremation facility, staff verify the identity against the death certificate, the cremation authorization form, and an internal tracking tag. A non-combustible metal identification disc—stamped with a unique number—is placed with the body and stays with the remains through every stage, including inside the cremation chamber itself.
Before the body enters the chamber, technicians remove battery-powered medical implants. Pacemakers and implantable defibrillators contain batteries that can explode at high temperatures, which can damage the cremation chamber's refractory lining and injure staff. The removal is performed by a licensed technician and is a standard step, not an optional service (though some providers charge a separate fee for it).
Jewelry, external prosthetics, and non-implanted medical devices are removed and returned to the family unless the family specifically requests they be cremated with the body.
The body is placed in an alternative container—typically corrugated cardboard or unfinished wood—rather than a traditional casket. Under the FTC Funeral Rule, no provider can require a casket for cremation.
The Cremation Chamber
The body in its container enters the retort, a specialized industrial chamber lined with high-density refractory bricks. The chamber operates at 1,400–1,800°F using natural gas or propane-fired burners.
The primary combustion phase reduces soft tissue and organic material to vaporous gases over two to four hours, depending on the body's size. These gases pass through a secondary afterburner chamber where any remaining particulates are combusted before the exhaust exits through a stack fitted with emission controls.
During the process, each cremation is tracked separately, with the identification tag remaining with the remains through the process.
Cooling and Processing
After the burn cycle completes, the remaining material—calcified bone fragments and non-combustible metals—cools for 30 to 60 minutes. Technicians use magnetic separators and manual sorting to extract surgical implants (hip joints, knee replacements, spinal hardware), dental fillings, and any residual metal from the container's hardware. These metals are recycled according to local environmental regulations.
The clean bone fragments are placed in a cremulator, a processing unit that grinds them into a uniform, fine consistency. The result is a pale gray to off-white powder weighing three to seven pounds, depending on the person's bone density and body size.

Return of Remains
The processed remains are sealed in a heavy-gauge plastic bag, placed in either a temporary container (a basic plastic or cardboard box) or the family's selected urn, and accompanied by the metal identification tag. The family picks them up or the facility ships them via USPS Priority Mail Express—the only carrier legally authorized to transport cremated remains in the United States.
The entire process from arrival at the facility to return of remains typically takes seven to fourteen days. Most of that time is administrative—waiting for the death certificate, the cremation permit, and the mandatory state waiting period (24–72 hours, depending on jurisdiction). The physical cremation and processing take one day.
What the Remains Look Like
Cremated remains don't look like fireplace ash. They're heavier, coarser, and closer in texture to fine sand. The color ranges from pale gray to off-white. There's nothing visually disturbing about them—they look like finely ground mineral powder, which is essentially what they are.
