DIC Rates 2026: Current Monthly Amounts for Surviving Spouses and Children

2026 DIC Base Rate for Surviving Spouses

The standard Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) rate for a surviving spouse in 2026 is $1,699.36 per month. This is a tax-free, non-needs-based benefit — meaning the VA does not count your income, savings, or other assets when determining eligibility. Eligibility depends on your status as a qualifying survivor and whether the veteran's service or disability meets VA's DIC rules.

DIC is paid to surviving spouses when:

  • The service member died in the line of duty while on active duty, active duty for training, or inactive duty training, or the veteran died from a service-connected injury or disease, OR
  • The veteran was rated totally disabled for at least 10 years immediately before death, or since release from active duty for at least 5 years immediately before death, or for at least 1 year before death if the veteran was a former prisoner of war who died after September 30, 1999

Additional Monthly Amounts

Several add-on payments can increase the DIC above the base rate:

Add-On 2026 Monthly Amount Who Qualifies
8-year P&T provision +$360.85 Veteran had a totally disabling rating for the 8 full years leading up to death, and the spouse was married to the veteran during those years
Dependent child under 18 +$421.00 per child Each qualifying minor child
Aid & Attendance +$421.00 Spouse who needs daily help with personal care
Housebound +$197.22 Spouse substantially confined to home
Transitional benefit +$359.80 First 2 years after death, if there is at least one minor child

A surviving spouse caring for two minor children who also qualifies for Aid & Attendance would receive: $1,699.36 + ($421.00 × 2) + $421.00 = $2,962.36 per month after the two-year transitional period. During the first two years after death, the $359.80 transitional benefit raises that example to $3,322.16 per month, tax-free.

Child-Only DIC Rates (No Surviving Spouse)

When there is no surviving spouse, DIC is paid directly to eligible dependent children:

Number of Children 2026 Monthly Combined Payment
1 child $717.50
2 children $1,032.19 (split equally)
3 children $1,346.92 (split equally)
Each additional child +$314.69 added to the total

A school-age child between 18 and 23 who is enrolled full-time in an approved educational institution receives $356.66 per month as a separate payment. A permanently incapacitated child (helpless before age 18) receives $717.50 per month regardless of age.

The Month-of-Death Payment

When a veteran who was receiving VA disability compensation or pension dies, the surviving spouse is entitled to the veteran's full monthly benefit for the month of death — even if the veteran died on the first day of the month. This is called the month-of-death payment, authorized under 38 U.S.C. § 5310.

This payment is separate from DIC. If it has not arrived, contact the VA at 1-800-827-1000 and ask about the month-of-death benefit.

How DIC Differs from the Survivors Pension

These two benefits confuse many families because both are monthly VA payments to surviving spouses. The key differences:

  • DIC requires a service-connected death, a line-of-duty death during qualifying service, or a qualifying total-disability period of 10 years, 5 years from release from active duty, or 1 year for a former POW. No income or asset limits. Base rate is $1,699.36/mo.
  • Survivors Pension requires wartime service but no service-connected death. It is needs-based — your countable income must fall below the Maximum Annual Pension Rate, and your net worth cannot exceed $163,699.

You cannot receive both simultaneously. If you qualify for both, the VA pays whichever benefit is higher. In most cases, DIC is the larger amount.

How to Apply

File VA Form 21P-534EZ (Application for DIC, Survivors Pension, and/or Accrued Benefits by a Surviving Spouse or Child). You can submit it online through VA.gov, by mail to the VA Pension Intake Center, or through an accredited Veterans Service Organization at no cost.

Attach a copy of the death certificate, your marriage certificate, the veteran's DD Form 214, and — if claiming service-connected death — any medical evidence linking the cause of death to service.

Filing an Intent to File (VA Form 21-0966) gives you up to 12 months to complete your claim and may preserve an earlier effective date. If VA receives the completed claim within one year after the veteran's death, an awarded benefit may be effective from the first day of the month of death.

The Veteran's Death Benefits & Survivor Claims toolkit includes a DIC Calculation Worksheet that maps your specific situation — add-ons, child counts, concurrent SBP — to an exact monthly figure before you file.
