The Supplications That Matter Most

When a Muslim dies, the living carry a responsibility that extends well beyond the funeral. Continuous supplication (du'a) for the deceased is one of three things that continue to benefit a person after death — the Prophet ﷺ taught that a righteous child who makes du'a for their parent is among the deeds whose reward never stops.

Knowing which prayers to recite, and when, removes a layer of anxiety during an already overwhelming time.

Du'a During the Janazah Prayer

The most important supplication for the deceased happens during Salat al-Janazah, specifically after the third Takbeer. The core du'a used across all four Sunni schools:

"Allahummaghfir li-hayyina wa-mayyitina, wa-shahidina wa-gha'ibina, wa-saghirina wa-kabirina, wa-dhakarina wa-unthana. Allahumma man ahyaytahu minna fa-ahyihi 'alal-Islam, wa-man tawaffaytahu minna fa-tawaffahu 'alal-Iman."

Meaning: O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those present and those absent, our young and our old, our males and our females. O Allah, whomever among us You keep alive, let them live upon Islam, and whomever You cause to die, let them die upon faith.

A longer, highly recommended version adds:

"Allahumma la tahrimna ajrahu, wa la taftinna ba'dahu, waghfir lana wa lahu."

Meaning: O Allah, do not deprive us of their reward, do not test us after them, and forgive us and them.

Du'a When Lowering the Body into the Grave

As male relatives lower the shrouded body into the grave, those who do so recite:

"Bismillah wa 'ala millati Rasoolillah"

(Some narrations use "wa 'ala sunnati Rasoolillah")

Meaning: In the name of Allah and upon the way of the Messenger of Allah.

Du'a at the Graveside After Burial

Once the grave has been filled, the congregation stands briefly to make supplication. This is the time to ask Allah to forgive the deceased and grant them firmness during their questioning by the angels Munkar and Nakir:

"Allahummaghfir lahu, Allahumma thabbit-hu."

Meaning: O Allah, forgive them. O Allah, make them firm.

The Prophet ﷺ would stand at the grave after burial and say to his companions: "Ask forgiveness for your brother and ask that he be made steadfast, for he is now being questioned."

Ongoing Du'a After the Funeral

Private supplication for the deceased can be made at any time — during your own daily prayers, after finishing Salah, while visiting the grave, or simply whenever they come to mind. There is no specific formula required for ongoing du'a. Speak from your heart, asking Allah for mercy, forgiveness, and an expansion of their grave.

The most commonly recited ongoing supplication:

"Rabbighfir lahu warhamhu, wa 'afihi, wa'fu 'anhu, wa akrim nuzulahu, wa wassi' mudkhalahu."

Meaning: O Lord, forgive them and have mercy on them, grant them well-being, pardon them, honor their reception, and widen their entrance (into Paradise).

What Not to Do

Certain practices around du'a for the deceased have no basis in the Sunnah and are considered cultural innovations (bid'ah) by mainstream Sunni scholars:

• Gathering specifically on the 3rd, 7th, or 40th day for congregational Qur'an recitation or feasts is not from the prophetic tradition.
• Hiring professional Qur'an reciters to read over the grave is not part of the core Sunnah guidance summarized here.
• Loud, theatrical wailing or screaming is explicitly prohibited. Quiet weeping is natural and permitted.

The most authentic form of ongoing benefit is private supplication, giving charity (Sadaqah Jariyah) in their name, and performing Hajj or Umrah on their behalf if they had not fulfilled this obligation.
