Carrying Ashes Home Is Simpler Than Full Repatriation — If You Know the Rules

After a cremation at the Ritsona facility in Greece (the country's only operational crematorium), bringing the ashes back to the UK is straightforward compared to full-body repatriation. Most major airlines allow passengers to carry one cremation urn in hand luggage on the Athens-to-UK route. But the urn material, advance notification, and documentation requirements trip up families who assume they can just pack the urn and go.

Airline-by-Airline Rules

British Airways allows cremated remains as hand luggage. Notify the airline in advance when booking or by calling customer service. At check-in, present the death certificate and cremation certificate. The urn must pass through the X-ray scanner without issue.

easyJet and Ryanair both permit cremation urns in hand luggage on Greece-to-UK routes. The same advance-notification and documentation requirements apply.

Aegean Airlines (the Greek national carrier) allows urns in hand luggage, with advance notification and supporting documents.

All airlines share one universal restriction: the urn must be made of an X-ray transparent material — wood, plastic, ceramic, or cardboard. Security scanners must be able to view the interior contents.

Why Metal Urns Are Rejected

Lead-lined, solid metal, or thick stone urns will be refused at airport security. The scanner cannot see through them, and security officers are not permitted to open a sealed cremation urn for manual inspection. If you arrive at the gate with a non-transparent urn, you will not be allowed to board with it.

If the ashes were placed in a metal urn at the Ritsona crematorium or the funeral director's premises, you have two options:

1. Ask the funeral director to transfer the ashes to a temporary transport container made of wood or plastic before you leave Greece.
2. Purchase a travel-specific urn designed for air transport — these are widely available from Greek funeral directors and are specifically made to clear X-ray screening.

Documents to Carry

Keep these in your hand luggage alongside the urn:

• Cremation certificate from the Ritsona Crematorium
• Greek death certificate (the Ληξιαρχική Πράξη Θανάτου from the Lixiarcheio)
• Official English translation of the death certificate
• Boarding pass and airline confirmation showing the urn was declared in advance

Greek airport security at Athens (ATH) and Thessaloniki (SKG) are accustomed to processing cremation urns on outbound flights. Carry the documents above with the urn and confirm the airline's current requirements before departure.

If You Cannot Carry the Urn Personally

If no family member is travelling to collect the ashes, they must be shipped via a specialist international air freight courier. Standard postal services (Royal Mail, Hellenic Post) and commercial parcel carriers (DHL, FedEx, UPS) do not accept human ashes. The Greek funeral director or an international repatriation company can arrange courier transport to a UK address, though the cost is significantly higher than carrying the urn yourself.

Cremation at Ritsona: The Prerequisite

Before any of this applies, the cremation itself must be authorised. Greek cremation requires the death certificate, a formal declaration of the deceased's wish to be cremated (or a notarised consent form signed by all first-degree next of kin), a certificate of no forensic intervention from the medical examiner, and confirmation that any pacemaker has been removed. The death certificate must be registered at the Lixiarcheio within 60 hours of the certified time of death for cremation to remain a legal option.
