Your Role in the Music Decision

A traditional hymn-heavy service can feel disconnected when the person was in their teens or twenties. Contemporary and indie songs often resonate more strongly. "Fix You," "Chasing Cars," and "Saturn" have become standard at younger people's services because they acknowledge loss without the religious framework some families skip.

If the death was sudden — an accident, overdose, or suicide — instrumental tracks can work better than lyrics. "To Build a Home" by The Cinematic Orchestra and "Adagio for Strings" by Samuel Barber carry emotional weight without saying anything that might feel wrong in the specific context of how the person died.

Practical Coordination

If the family has delegated music coordination to you, confirm these details early:

• Venue rules: Catholic services restrict secular music during the Mass. Secular venues and celebrations of life usually allow personal song choices, but confirm venue policies and performance license coverage.
• Format: Ask the funeral director what format they need — USB (FAT32), CD, or a song title to pull from their digital library. UK crematoriums on the Obitus system have over 100,000 songs.
