The Baseline: What Traditional Burial Puts in the Ground
A conventional American burial introduces a significant amount of manufactured material into the soil. Per burial, the typical inventory includes a hardwood or metal casket, a concrete vault or grave liner, and embalming fluid — primarily a solution of formaldehyde, methanol, and other chemical preservatives.
At national scale, those choices create a substantial flow of manufactured material and embalming chemicals. Green burial avoids the conventional vault, grave liner, and chemical preservation used in that arrangement, using a biodegradable casket or shroud instead.

Formaldehyde in the Soil
Formaldehyde is a known human carcinogen classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as Group 1 — the highest certainty classification. It is the primary active ingredient in conventional embalming fluid, used to halt decomposition by cross-linking proteins in tissue.
When an embalmed body is buried, formaldehyde is introduced into the burial environment. Its persistence and movement depend on soil type, moisture, and microbial activity.
Funeral workers face direct exposure to formaldehyde during embalming, so occupational handling and ventilation matter.
Green burial uses no embalming chemicals. The body is preserved through refrigeration or dry ice cooling until burial, then allowed to decompose naturally in the soil without chemical embalming.
Concrete Vaults and Manufacturing Carbon
Concrete outer burial containers — vaults and grave liners — are required by most conventional cemeteries in the United States. Their stated purpose is to prevent the ground from settling after the casket deteriorates, maintaining the flat-lawn aesthetic that makes mowing easier.
Manufacturing one concrete vault requires Portland cement, aggregate, water, and significant energy for mixing and curing. Cement production is a major global source of CO₂ emissions. A single burial vault represents a small fraction of that, but the aggregate contribution is measurable.
Green burial requires no vault and no grave liner. The soil settles naturally over the first one to three years as the body and biodegradable container decompose. Conservation cemeteries manage this by mounding soil at burial and monitoring the site.

Land Use: Preservation vs Consumption
Conventional cemeteries are among the most chemically intensive land uses in suburban landscapes. Maintaining the flat-lawn aesthetic requires regular mowing, chemical fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides — inputs that suppress native plant communities and reduce biodiversity.
Conservation burial grounds operate under the opposite model. Plot fees fund conservation easements — legal instruments that permanently protect the land from development. The cemetery itself functions as a nature preserve, managed with prescribed burns, sustainable grazing, invasive species control, and native plantings.
This is not a minor distinction. A conservation burial ground does not just avoid harm — it actively funds the permanent legal protection of open land. The burial fee becomes a direct conservation investment. Conservation burial grounds use this model at sites across the United States.
What Green Burial Does Not Claim
Honest assessment matters. A single green burial does not offset a lifetime of carbon emissions. The body itself releases greenhouse gases during decomposition regardless of method. And cremation, which avoids the land-use question entirely, has its own trade-offs — primarily the energy cost of sustained high-temperature combustion and the mercury emissions from dental amalgam.
Green burial's environmental case rests on three specific, verifiable advantages: no embalming chemicals introduced into the soil, no non-biodegradable burial-container material in the ground, and — at conservation burial grounds — permanent land protection. Those are real and measurable. They do not need to be inflated.
Alternatives to Embalming
Families who want preservation for a viewing or multi-day vigil have options that do not involve formaldehyde:
- Refrigeration: Cold storage at 33–40°F slows decomposition while the remains are held. Available at any funeral home with a refrigeration unit, typically $35–$100 per day.
- Dry ice: Solid CO₂ placed around the body's core provides effective cooling for home vigils. About 30 pounds for the first 24 hours, 10–20 pounds daily after that.
- Techni-Ice polymer sheets: Reusable, no off-gassing, safer to handle than dry ice. Requires rotation every 3–4 hours.
- Essential oil–based care: Some GBC-approved products use plant-derived compounds for short-term care; verify the product and cemetery or funeral-home requirements before relying on them for a viewing.
