Instagram Memorialization Request: How to Memorialize or Delete an Account

Memorialization vs. Deletion: Two Options

Instagram gives families two choices when an account holder dies. There is no third option — you cannot access the account, download DMs, or take over posting.

Memorialization freezes the profile in place. A "Remembering" badge appears next to the name. The account stays visible to existing followers, and all posts, photos, and comments remain. No one can log in, edit the profile, accept new followers, or read direct messages. The account stops appearing in recommendations, Explore, and search suggestions.

Deletion permanently removes the account, including all photos, videos, stories, comments, followers, and DMs. This is irreversible.

How to Request Memorialization

1. Go to Instagram's memorialization request form (search "Instagram memorialization request" — the form is at help.instagram.com under their Special Requests section).
2. Provide the deceased's full name and Instagram username.
3. Upload proof of death: a death certificate, obituary, or published news article confirming the person has passed.
4. You do not need to prove you're a family member to request memorialization. Anyone who can provide proof of death can submit the form.

Timeline: Instagram doesn't publish a specific timeline. Based on user reports, memorialization typically processes within 5–15 business days, though some requests take longer. You'll receive an email confirmation when it's complete.

How to Request Deletion

Deletion requires more documentation than memorialization because it's irreversible:

1. Go to Instagram's special request form for removing a deceased person's account.
2. Provide the deceased's full name and Instagram username.
3. Upload a certified death certificate.
4. Provide proof of your relationship to the deceased: a birth certificate showing you as a parent, marriage certificate for a spouse, will or trust naming you as executor, or court-issued Letters Testamentary.
5. Upload a copy of your government-issued photo ID.

Who can request deletion: Only verified immediate family members or legally appointed executors. Unlike memorialization, which anyone can request, deletion requires proof of authority.

What Memorialization Actually Changes

The profile stays public (or private, matching its original setting), but several features are permanently disabled:

• No login access. Even if you know the password, Instagram blocks login to memorialized accounts.
• No editing. Profile photo, bio, posts, and stories are frozen.
• No DM access. Direct messages cannot be read by anyone, even family members. Instagram does not release message content under any circumstances.
• No new followers. The account stops accepting follow requests.
• No recommendations. The account won't appear in Explore, suggested users, or birthday notifications.
• Posts stay visible. Everything the person posted remains on the profile. Comments from others also remain.

Before You Request Either Option

Download what you can first. If you are authorized to access the account and can get past two-factor authentication, download the account's data before requesting memorialization or deletion:

1. Log in through the Instagram app or instagram.com.
2. Go to Settings → Your Activity → Download Your Information.
3. Request a download — Instagram will compile photos, videos, messages, and profile data into a downloadable file, usually ready within 48 hours.

Once the account is memorialized, this option disappears. If you're unsure whether you'll want the photos later, download first.

Check for a Facebook link. Many Instagram accounts are linked to Facebook. If you request memorialization on Facebook, it doesn't automatically memorialize Instagram (and vice versa). Handle each platform separately. Meta owns both but processes requests independently.

Common Issues

"I submitted the form but nothing happened." Instagram's processing queue varies. If two weeks pass with no response, resubmit the form. Include a note referencing your original submission date.

"I know the password but Instagram won't let me log in." If someone else already submitted a memorialization request and it was processed, the account is frozen and login is permanently disabled — even with correct credentials.

"The deceased's Instagram was hacked after they died." Report the account as compromised through Instagram's standard hacking report form, then separately submit the memorialization or deletion request. Mention the hack in your submission.

"I want to save their stories/reels before they disappear." Stories expire 24 hours after posting, but stories saved to Highlights remain. If you can access the account, download everything through the data download tool. If you can't, there's no way to retrieve expired stories after memorialization.
