When Is Janazah Prayer Performed for a Child?

After the four-month threshold, Salat al-Janazah is performed for a child who was born alive — even if they lived for only moments. If the baby cried, moved, or breathed, the full funeral prayer is obligatory under that rule.

The Structure: Same Four Takbeers, Different Dua

The janazah prayer for a child follows the same overall structure as for an adult — four takbeers, performed standing, with no bowing or prostration. The difference is in the supplication recited after the third takbeer.

First Takbeer: Recite as normal.

• Hanafi: The opening praise (Thana) — "Subhanaka Allahumma wa bihamdika..."
• Shafi'i, Maliki, Hanbali: Surah al-Fatiha

Second Takbeer: Recite the Durood-e-Ibrahim (salutations upon the Prophet ﷺ) — "Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammadin wa 'ala aali Muhammadin..." This is the same for adults and children.

Third Takbeer: This is where the prayer changes. Instead of the standard supplication asking Allah to forgive the deceased's sins (which do not apply to a child who has not reached the age of accountability), you recite a specific dua asking Allah to make the child a source of reward for the parents.

For a male child:

"Allahummaj'alhu lana faratan, waj'alhu lana ajran wa dhukhran, waj'alhu lana shafi'an wa mushaffa'a."

(O Allah, make him a preceding reward for us, make him a source of recompense and a treasure for us, and make him an intercessor for us whose intercession is accepted.)

For a female child:

"Allahummaj'alha lana faratan, waj'alha lana ajran wa dhukhran, waj'alha lana shafi'atan wa mushaffa'ah."

(O Allah, make her a preceding reward for us, make her a source of recompense and a treasure for us, and make her an intercessor for us whose intercession is accepted.)

Fourth Takbeer: Brief silent personal supplication, then the taslim:

• Hanafi and Shafi'i: Two taslims (turning right, then left)
• Maliki and Hanbali: A single taslim to the right

Why the Dua Is Different

Children who die before reaching the age of religious accountability (bulugh) are not accountable for sins. The standard adult supplication — which asks Allah to forgive the deceased, have mercy on them, and pardon their wrongdoings — does not apply. Instead, the child's prayer focuses on two themes:

1. The child as a "faratan" — a predecessor who arrives in the afterlife before the parents, waiting to intercede on their behalf.
2. The child as a source of ongoing reward — the patience and faith the parents demonstrate through their loss is itself a form of worship that generates reward.

This theological framing offers genuine comfort to grieving parents. The loss is not meaningless — in Islamic understanding, the child actively benefits the parents in the afterlife.

Practical Notes

• Who leads the prayer? The same rules apply as for an adult: the Imam or the wali (father/guardian) leads, and the congregation follows.
• Where is the child positioned? During the prayer, the child's body is placed in front of the Imam; exact positioning can vary by madhhab, so follow local mosque guidance.
• Ghusl and kafan? A child born alive after the four-month threshold receives full ghusl and is shrouded in white cotton, just like an adult. The number of kafan layers can vary, so ask the local mosque or funeral director which practice applies.
