Three Types of Funeral Announcements in Poland

When someone dies in Poland, the family typically issues up to three distinct announcements, each serving a different purpose and audience. Getting the format and wording right matters — these documents are public, permanent, and closely read by the community.

The Klepsydra: Funeral Announcement Poster

The klepsydra is the most visible form of death announcement in Poland. It is a printed poster — traditionally black-bordered on white paper — displayed on church doors, community noticeboards, lamp posts near the deceased's home, and the entrance to the deceased's workplace.

A standard klepsydra includes:

• A cross or religious symbol at the top
• The phrase "Z głębokim żalem zawiadamiamy..." (With deep sorrow we announce...) or "Odszedł/Odeszła od nas..." (He/She has departed from us...)
• The deceased's full name, including maiden name for married women (z domu)
• Age at death or birth and death years
• The date, time, and location of the funeral Mass
• The date and time of the rosary vigil, if applicable
• The cemetery where the burial will take place
• The family's identity as signatories: "Pogrążona w smutku Rodzina" (The grieving Family) or specific names

Most funeral homes (zakłady pogrzebowe) produce klepsydry as part of their standard service package — the family provides the information and approves the layout, and the funeral home prints and distributes them. Expect 20–50 copies for a typical funeral.

In urban areas, klepsydry increasingly appear on local news websites and municipal portals alongside the physical posters.

The Nekrolog: Formal Death Notice

A nekrolog is a more formal, often longer announcement published in a regional or national newspaper. It is standard practice for:

• Prominent community members, professionals, or public figures
• Situations where the deceased's social network extends beyond the local parish
• Workplace-published notices where the employer announces the death of an employee or retiree

The nekrolog typically includes a brief biography — professional achievements, organizational memberships, military service — alongside the funeral logistics. It is signed by the family, the employer, or a professional association.

Newspaper nekrology are paid announcements. Costs depend on the publication and the size of the notice; confirm the current rate before ordering.

Formal Funeral Invitations

In some families, particularly those organizing larger or more traditional funerals, individual invitations are sent to specific guests. These are distinct from the public klepsydra — they are personal and carry an implicit expectation that the recipient will attend.

The wording follows a standard formula:

Rodzina śp. [Imię i Nazwisko] zaprasza na Mszę Świętą pogrzebową, która zostanie odprawiona w dniu [data] o godz. [godzina] w kościele [nazwa kościoła], po czym nastąpi odprowadzenie na miejsce wiecznego spoczynku na cmentarzu [nazwa cmentarza].

(The family of the late [Name] invites you to the funeral Mass, which will be celebrated on [date] at [time] in [church name], followed by the procession to the place of eternal rest at [cemetery name].)

These can be printed cards, phone calls, or increasingly, messages sent through family group chats — the medium is less important than making the personal gesture.

Timing

All three announcements should go out as soon as the funeral date, time, and location are confirmed with the parish and cemetery. There is no single legal deadline for a klepsydra; coordinate printing and posting with the family and funeral home once the details are settled.
