What Natural Organic Reduction Is

Natural organic reduction (NOR), commonly called human composting, transforms human remains into nutrient-rich soil through a controlled, accelerated decomposition process. The body is placed in a reusable vessel with wood chips, alfalfa, and straw. Over 30 to 60 days, microbial activity heats the vessel to temperatures above 131°F (55°C), which breaks down the body — including bones — and eliminates pathogens.

The result is roughly one cubic yard of soil — enough to fill a standard pickup truck bed. Families receive the finished soil and can use it to plant trees, enrich a garden, or donate it to conservation land restoration projects.

Recompose, the first licensed NOR facility in the US, opened in Washington state in 2020. Several more providers have launched since then in states where the practice is legal.

Where It's Legal

Natural organic reduction is legal in some U.S. states, but the rules and facility requirements are state-specific. Check current state law and confirm that a licensed provider is available before relying on this option.

Each state sets its own regulatory framework. Some require a licensed facility; others are still developing rules. If NOR is not explicitly legal where you live, do not assume that it is permitted; check the current state rules before making arrangements.

Availability outside the United States depends on local law and providers. Families in the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand should verify current access and legal requirements locally.

How It Compares to Green Burial

Both NOR and green burial reject embalming, sealed caskets, and concrete vaults. Both return the body to the earth. The differences are practical:

Timeline. Green burial places the body in the ground within 3 to 5 days of death. NOR takes 30 to 60 days in a facility, after which families receive the soil.

Location. Green burial happens at a specific place — a cemetery plot or private land — that families can visit. NOR produces soil that can be distributed anywhere but doesn't create a fixed memorial site.

Cost. Green burial ranges from $1,800 to $6,000 total. NOR pricing varies by provider and state; request a current quote from a licensed facility.

Carbon footprint. NOR's footprint depends on the facility's energy use and the transport required. Green burial's carbon footprint depends on the specific practices used — a conservation burial with hand-dug graves and no transportation beyond a personal vehicle has a very small footprint, while shipping a body cross-country to a green cemetery adds considerably.

Religious compatibility. Green burial aligns with Jewish, Islamic, Buddhist, and many Christian traditions that require the body to be placed directly in the earth. NOR is newer, and religious authorities may differ on whether it satisfies their requirements. Islamic and Jewish law requires burial in the ground, which NOR doesn't satisfy. Individual families should consult their clergy.

How It Compares to Cremation

Flame cremation uses natural gas to heat a retort to 1,400–1,800°F, consuming roughly 28 gallons of fuel per cremation and releasing approximately 535 pounds of CO2. It also releases mercury from dental amalgam, particulate matter, and other emissions.

Water cremation (alkaline hydrolysis) uses a heated alkaline solution to dissolve soft tissue, yielding bone fragments that are processed into a powder similar to traditional cremation ashes. It uses significantly less energy than flame cremation and produces no direct emissions.

NOR uses no fossil fuel for the decomposition process itself — the microbial activity generates its own heat. The facility has operational energy costs (HVAC, monitoring equipment), but the per-body carbon footprint is substantially lower than either cremation method.

What Families Receive

After the process completes, the soil is cured for an additional 2 to 4 weeks. Any non-organic materials (dental work, surgical implants) are removed. The finished product is tested for pathogen safety.

Families typically receive the soil in bags or a container of their choosing. Some options include:

  • Planting a memorial tree or garden
  • Spreading the soil on family land
  • Donating to an ecological restoration project — several providers partner with conservation organizations
  • Keeping a small amount and donating the rest

The soil is genuine, nutrient-rich compost — it's not symbolic. Plants grown in it thrive because of the high organic matter content.

Choosing Between Green Burial and Human Composting

The choice often comes down to two questions: Do you want a specific place to visit? And does your faith tradition require burial in the ground?

If having a fixed memorial site matters, green burial at a conservation cemetery gives you that — plus the knowledge that your plot fees protect the surrounding land in perpetuity. If returning to the earth in a distributed way appeals more, or if you want the soil to become part of a family garden or tree, NOR may be the better fit.
