Register Death in Cyprus

Registering a death in the Republic of Cyprus is time-sensitive: the statutory deadline is 15 days. The fee rises from €5 to €30 per copy if registration is more than one year late, with additional sworn-statement requirements. Where to Register

Registration must happen at the District Administration Office in the district where the death occurred — not where the deceased lived, and not where you are staying. If the death happened in Paphos, you register at the Paphos District Administration Office. If it happened in Limassol, you go to Limassol. The central repository for civil records sits at the Civil Registry and Migration Department on Archbishop Makarios III Avenue 90 in Nicosia, but individual registrations happen at the district level.

In practice, the licensed local funeral director typically handles registration on behalf of the family. This is worth confirming upfront with whichever funeral home you appoint — do not assume it is automatic, and do not assume they will order enough certified copies.

Documents You Need to Present

The informant (usually the funeral director acting on your behalf) must bring:

• The original medical certificate citing the cause of death, signed and stamped by the attending doctor
• The deceased's original British passport
• A completed local death registration form

Upon registration, the District Administration Office issues the official Civil Death Certificate. Two things about this certificate that matter for UK processes: it is printed trilingually in Greek, Turkish, and English, which is helpful — but the cause of death does not appear on the certificate at all, which is not helpful. UK banks and insurers will ask for it, and you will need the separate medical certificate to satisfy them.

Fees and Copies

Each certified copy costs €5. Order at least five copies — you will need separate originals for the bank, the life insurer, the pension provider, the UK Probate Registry, and possibly a solicitor handling cross-border estate matters. Using the same original across institutions creates bottlenecks because each one holds it during processing.

If registration happens more than one year after the death, the fee rises to €30 per copy and you must submit a notarised sworn statement alongside either confirmation of death from a doctor or confirmation of burial from a priest. Do not let this deadline lapse without good reason.

The 15-Day Deadline

Cypriot law requires death registration within 15 days of the death. The funeral director should initiate this within the first few days, but families should actively confirm it is happening rather than assuming. If the delay extends beyond one year, the additional sworn statement requirement and higher fee add friction at a time when you already have too much paperwork.

If a forensic post-mortem is ordered and the body is held by the state for autopsy, the medical certificate of cause may be issued by the state pathologist rather than the attending doctor. After Registration: The Apostille

The civil death certificate is a Cypriot public document. For UK financial institutions, pension funds, or the Probate Court to accept it, you need to legalise it with a Hague Apostille from the Ministry of Justice and Public Order in Nicosia. This costs €5 per document in stamps and is available as a same-day walk-in service.
