Why Speed Matters When a Pensioner Dies Abroad

When an Australian Age Pension or DVA recipient dies in Vietnam — or anywhere overseas — payments continue flowing into their bank account until Services Australia processes a formal death notification. Under the Social Security Act 1991, the government actively recovers overpayments from the deceased's estate, and federal audit reports confirm this clawback is aggressively pursued even when the delay was caused by the complexity of securing foreign documentation.

The practical problem: getting a certified, translated, authenticated Vietnamese death certificate takes two to three weeks. Meanwhile, fortnightly pension payments keep landing. Every day of delay increases the amount the estate owes back.

How to Notify Services Australia (Centrelink)

Call the Centrelink Bereavement line on 132 300 (within Australia) or +61 3 6222 3455 (from overseas). You'll need the deceased's Customer Reference Number (CRN), their full name, date of birth, and the date and location of death.

Make the initial phone notification even before the certified documentation is ready; Services Australia may follow up with a written request for proof of death, and that's where the Vietnamese paperwork comes in.

It can include Services Australia in the notification, but notify DVA separately if relevant and follow up with any agency requests for proof of death.

DVA (Department of Veterans' Affairs) Notification

If the deceased received a DVA pension, disability compensation, or Gold Card benefits, notify DVA separately on 1800 VETERAN (1800 838 372) (within Australia) or +61 2 6289 1133 (from overseas). Notify both agencies separately so each can process the death notification.

DVA may also assess a lump sum bereavement payment for a surviving partner; notification allows it to assess eligibility and adjust payments.

Preventing Estate Clawbacks

The government can and does recover overpayments from the deceased's estate assets — bank accounts, superannuation, property. The executor's strongest protection is a documented notification timeline: note the date and time of every phone call, the name of the officer, and any reference numbers provided.

If the estate has already been distributed before the recovery notice arrives, resolving the overpayment becomes more difficult. This makes early notification — even before the certified death certificate is ready — a financial priority, not just an administrative one.

What Documentation You'll Eventually Need

Services Australia may ask for proof of death and an English translation. For a death in Vietnam, provide the Vietnamese Extract of Death Certificate (Trích lục khai tử) issued by the district-level People's Committee and confirm whether Services Australia requires a NAATI-certified translator or can arrange translation; NAATI remains the relevant standard for Australian courts, banks, and state registries.
