Surviving Spouse Military Benefits After a Veteran Dies
Military Retiree Pay Stops the Day They Die
This catches almost every surviving spouse off guard. Military retired pay halts on the exact date of death. Any deposits that hit the bank after that date get clawed back automatically — DFAS initiates a debt recoupment, and the bank reverses the funds without warning.
Call DFAS at 1-800-321-1080 or submit a notification through the askDFAS online portal within the first 24 hours. You'll need the veteran's full name, Social Security number, date of death, and cause of death. Prompt notification prevents overpayments from stacking up into a balance you'd be legally required to return.
Once DFAS processes the notification, the eligible beneficiary can claim any Arrears of Pay — usually a one-time prorated amount for the retiree's final month — by submitting SF 1174.
Survivor Benefit Plan Annuity
If the veteran enrolled in the Survivor Benefit Plan during their career, you still need to file DD Form 2656-7 to formally claim the annuity. SBP pays up to 55% of the veteran's selected base amount. The SBP-DIC offset was eliminated effective January 1, 2023, so eligible spouses receive full SBP and full DIC; SBP payments are subject to federal taxes.
The critical detail: SBP coverage is irrevocable after the election period. If your spouse elected it, you're covered. If they didn't, there's no retroactive enrollment.
Dependency and Indemnity Compensation
DIC is the VA's monthly tax-free payment to surviving spouses of veterans who died from a service-connected disability or who were rated totally disabled for at least ten continuous years before death. The base rate for 2026 starts at $1,699.36 per month for enlisted grades E-1 through E-6, scaling up by pay grade to $3,893.83 for a Special Chief of Staff-level officer.
Additional monthly add-ons include:
- Transitional benefit — $359 per month for the first two years if there are dependent children under 18
- 8-year provision — $360.85 per month if the veteran was rated totally disabled for eight continuous years and married to the spouse during those years
- Aid and Attendance — $421 per month if the surviving spouse needs daily assistance
- Child apportionment — $421 per month per dependent child under 18
File VA Form 21P-534EZ along with a certified death certificate and marriage certificate. There's no deadline for service-connected death claims, but filing quickly prevents gaps in household income.

VA Survivors Pension
For surviving spouses of wartime veterans whose death was not service-connected, the VA Survivors Pension provides monthly support if you meet the income threshold. From December 2025 through November 2026, the net worth limit is $163,699 — calculated by adding your annual income to total assets.
This pension is separate from DIC and has its own application process through VA Form 21P-534EZ. It's means-tested, so countable income and assets affect the monthly payment.
TRICARE and Healthcare Continuity
Surviving spouses of retirees retain TRICARE coverage, but the specific plan depends on age and Medicare eligibility. Spouses under 65 typically transition to TRICARE Select or TRICARE Prime. At 65, coverage shifts to TRICARE for Life (which works alongside Medicare Parts A and B).
Notify the DMDC/DEERS Support Office promptly to update your status and prevent coverage problems; TRICARE lists 1-800-538-9552 for reporting a beneficiary's death.
The Filing Sequence That Protects Your Income
The order matters because some benefits offset others:
- Day 1 — Notify DFAS (stops retired pay, triggers AOP and SBP)
- Day 1 — Notify SSA at 1-800-772-1213 (stops civilian Social Security, triggers survivor benefits)
- Week 1 — Contact VA at 1-800-827-1000 (initiates DIC or Survivors Pension application, burial benefits, Presidential Memorial Certificate)
- Promptly — Update DEERS for healthcare continuity
- Within 2 years — File VA Form 21-530 for most non-service-connected burial allowance claims; there is no time limit if the veteran died while under active VA hospital or contracted care
Missing the DFAS notification is the single most expensive mistake. Families who delay even a few weeks can face thousands in overpayment recovery.
