How to Unlock a Deceased Person's Phone (iPhone and Android)

The phone sitting on your loved one's nightstand holds the keys to everything — email, banking apps, two-factor authentication codes, and the password manager that unlocks every other account. If you can't get past that lock screen, the entire digital estate stalls.

Here's what actually works, what doesn't, and what order to try things.

Why the Phone Matters More Than Any Other Device

Most online accounts now require two-factor authentication (2FA) — a code sent by text or generated by an authenticator app on the phone. Without that code, you can't log into email. Without email, you can't reset passwords. Without passwords, you can't close subscriptions, file insurance claims, or recover cloud photos.

Keeping the phone charged and the cellular plan active during account triage helps preserve access to SMS verification codes.

Unlocking an iPhone

When Find My is enabled, Activation Lock ties the iPhone to the owner's Apple Account. There is no software hack, no third-party "unlock service," and no Genius Bar workaround that bypasses it without Apple's cooperation.

If you're the designated Legacy Contact: Open the Apple Digital Legacy portal and submit the access key the deceased set up for you, along with the death certificate. After approval, Apple creates a Legacy Contact account for access to certain iCloud data. This does not unlock the phone's passcode; Activation Lock can be removed after the request is completed, but the device must be erased before another person can use it.

If you have Letters Testamentary or equivalent court authority: Apple's Deceased Account support process requires legal documentation, generally including a death certificate and sometimes a court order or other documents. Submit them through Apple's online request form. Requirements depend on the country or region, and approval does not guarantee access to all iCloud data. Apple does not hand over the Apple ID password. If Apple removes Activation Lock after approving the request, the device must be erased before another person can use it.

If the phone uses Face ID or Touch ID: iPhone biometrics do not have a death-specific timer. A passcode is required after a restart, after more than 48 hours without an unlock, or after five failed biometric attempts.

What doesn't work: Third-party "iPhone unlock" services that charge hundreds of dollars upfront are almost universally scams. Apple's security architecture makes local bypass impossible without the Apple ID credentials or Apple's own intervention.

Unlocking an Android Phone

Android devices vary by manufacturer:

• Samsung: Samsung's Find My Mobile remote-unlock feature is disabled. A Samsung account registration does not enable remote screen-lock removal.
• Google Pixel and stock Android: Google's Inactive Account Manager can share data with trusted contacts after a set inactivity period (3–18 months). If that wasn't configured, you'll need to contact Google's deceased user support with a death certificate and legal authority.
• Factory Reset Protection (FRP): After a factory reset, a protected Android device requires the screen lock or a Google Account previously used on the device. A deceased-user data request does not remove this device lock.

Recovering Two-Factor Authentication Codes

Once you have the phone unlocked, check immediately for:

• SMS codes: Keep the cellular plan active. Port the number to a prepaid SIM if the carrier wants to close the account.
• Authenticator apps (Google Authenticator, Authy, Microsoft Authenticator): Use the app's documented transfer or recovery process; screenshots of rotating codes are not a backup. Authy can restore encrypted tokens only if backups were enabled and you have the backup password.
• Recovery codes: Check the phone's notes app, photos, and any password manager for saved backup codes.

If the phone is permanently locked and the cellular plan lapses, SMS codes to that number stop arriving. Contact each affected platform about its account-recovery process; arrange an authorized number transfer before service ends if you still need the number.

What to Do Right Now

1. Keep the phone charged and don't let it die
2. Don't cancel the phone plan — port the number if the carrier insists
3. Do not guess passcodes. An iPhone can erase its data after 10 failed passcode attempts if that setting is enabled; repeated attempts can also lock access on other devices.
4. Check for a Legacy Contact or Inactive Account Manager — these are the fastest paths
5. Gather legal documents — certified death certificate, Letters Testamentary, your government ID
