Widow and Widower Pension in Czech Republic

If your spouse died in the Czech Republic and they were paying into the Czech social security system, you may be entitled to a survivor pension (vdovský důchod for widows, vdovecký důchod for widowers). But there are strict notification deadlines and an application process that most foreigners do not know about.

When to Notify ČSSZ Directly

If the death is registered in the Czech Republic, the registry office informs the Czech Social Security Administration (Česká správa sociálního zabezpečení — ČSSZ) within two weeks of registration, and survivors generally do not have to report the death themselves. If the pensioner died abroad, survivors must notify ČSSZ directly. Pension payments made after death can become recoverable overpayments, so contact ČSSZ promptly to resolve the account.

What the Survivor Pension Pays

The widow/widower pension consists of two components:

  1. A basic flat amount set annually by the government
  2. A percentage-based portion equal to 50% of the deceased's pension entitlement

You can claim retroactive payments for up to five years from the date of your application — so even if you did not know about this entitlement immediately, past payments can be recovered.

How to Apply

Apply through the ČSSZ ePortal or at your local ČSSZ office. You will need:

  • The Czech death certificate (Úmrtní list)
  • Your marriage certificate
  • Your identification (passport or Czech residence card)
  • The deceased's social security number or pension payment details

If you are applying from outside the Czech Republic, contact ČSSZ to confirm the accepted submission route and required documents.

Health Insurance Obligations

Separately from the pension, you must return the deceased's public health insurance card (VZP or other insurer) to the insurer's regional office within 8 days of death. This helps the insurer update its records and resolve any outstanding medical claims.

For foreign employees without permanent Czech residence, the employer is responsible for notifying the health insurance company.

Life Insurance Claims

Life insurance policies in the Czech Republic are separate from the social security system. To claim:

  1. Contact the insurer directly with the death certificate and the policy number
  2. Provide identification proving you are the named beneficiary
  3. The insurer will process the claim according to the policy. Whether the proceeds bypass probate depends on the beneficiary designation.

If you do not know which insurer held the policy, tell the court-appointed notary during probate so the policy can be included in the asset inventory.

Overpayment Recovery

If the deceased continued receiving pension payments after death (common when the death is not immediately reported), ČSSZ will calculate the overpayment and recover it from the estate during probate. If the account lacks sufficient funds, the liability to repay falls sequentially on the person with disposal rights, the surviving spouse, or cohabiting children and parents. Any unpaid amount remains an estate debt.
