ADAC Repatriation Turkey and Travel Insurance After a Death Abroad
The Insurance Call That Must Happen First
German statutory health insurance (gesetzliche Krankenversicherung) does not cover international body repatriation. The cost of bringing remains from Turkey to Germany — €5,470 to €12,520 for coffin repatriation — falls entirely on the family unless they have specific coverage.
Three funding channels exist for German families: ADAC Plus membership, private travel health insurance, and the DITIB funeral fund. Each has strict eligibility rules. For ADAC and private travel insurance, contact the provider before hiring a funeral home: ADAC must manage its own logistics, and a private insurer may require prior approval or use its own network.
ADAC Plus: Comprehensive but Conditional
The ADAC (Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club) provides repatriation services under its Plus and Premium memberships. When it works, it's the most comprehensive coverage available — ADAC organizes and pays for the entire repatriation directly, from Turkish mortuary to German receiving funeral home. No out-of-pocket costs for the family.
But three eligibility rules catch families off guard:
The 50 km rule. The death must occur at least 50 kilometers from the member's permanent German residence. This is almost always satisfied for Turkey-related cases, but matters for German expats with a Turkish registered address.
The 92-day trip limit. Coverage applies only if the trip did not exceed 92 consecutive days from the date of departure from Germany. German retirees living in Turkey for months or years — a large population in Alanya, Antalya, and Fethiye — fall outside this window. ADAC will deny the claim entirely if the 92-day limit is breached.
ADAC must control the logistics. This is the rule families most often violate. ADAC explicitly requires that they organize and manage the repatriation process themselves. If a family independently contracts a Turkish funeral home, pays for embalming, coffin construction, or air freight out of pocket, and then submits receipts to ADAC for reimbursement, ADAC is legally entitled to deny the claim or severely limit any payout.
The correct sequence: call ADAC first, before engaging any local service provider. ADAC assigns their own repatriation coordinator, who selects the funeral home, arranges the coffin, and books the air freight.
Private Travel Insurance
A standard Auslandsreise-Krankenversicherung (international travel health insurance) covers 100% of direct repatriation costs — or an equivalent amount toward local burial — when the death results from an acute, unexpected medical emergency.
Key exclusions to verify:
- Pre-existing conditions. If the death resulted from a medical condition that was actively being treated or was expected to be terminal before departure, most policies exclude coverage.
- Cosmetic surgery and medical tourism. Deaths during or after elective cosmetic procedures are typically excluded unless the policy specifically covers medical tourism.
- Extreme sports. Deaths during paragliding, scuba diving beyond certain depths, or other high-risk activities may require a supplementary sports rider.
Contact a private insurer before hiring local services. If coverage is confirmed, the insurer may appoint the repatriation company, so obtain approval before paying a provider.

DITIB ZSU Funeral Fund
For families of Turkish origin or practicing Muslims, the DITIB Zekeriye Şentürk Unterstützungsfonds (ZSU) is a widely used mutual-aid fund. Members pay an annual fee (typically around €50) and receive comprehensive coverage for Islamic funeral rites and repatriation.
What the ZSU covers:
- Complete Islamic funeral ritual: washing (gusül), shrouding (kefen), funeral prayer (cenaze namazı)
- Full cost of repatriation transport between Turkey and Germany
- Coordination with local DITIB mosque communities at both ends
Limitations:
- Transfers outside the Turkey-Germany corridor are capped at approximately €3,000
- The fund does not cover municipal cemetery plot fees or long-term grave maintenance
- Transfers outside the Turkey-Germany corridor or involving non-member companions are capped at approximately €3,000
- Active membership and timely notification of the death to the DITIB board are required
Filing the Insurance Claim
Regardless of which coverage applies, the claim documentation is similar:
- Formül C (multilingual death certificate) — the primary proof of death
- Medical death report (Ölüm Raporu) documenting cause of death
- ADAC membership card or insurance policy number
- Receipts for any costs already incurred (only if pre-approved by the insurer)
- Police report, if the death involved an accident or was under investigation
For ADAC, the claims process is handled through the ADAC Assistance Center, which coordinates directly with the Turkish funeral home and German receiving partner. For private insurers, the process goes through the provider's international claims desk.
