Since June 2022, Indonesia has been a member of the Hague Apostille Convention. This replaced the old multi-step embassy legalization process with a single authentication step through the Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Kemenkumham). The change is faster and cheaper, but families who follow outdated advice still waste days pursuing the old embassy route.
Why the Apostille Matters for Singaporean Families
The Akta Kematian (official Indonesian death certificate) is issued exclusively in Bahasa Indonesia by a local Disdukcapil office. For this document to carry legal weight in Singapore, it must be authenticated as genuine by a recognized international authority.
Before 2022, this required a convoluted chain: the Indonesian Ministry of Law, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and then physical stamping by the Singapore Embassy in Jakarta. Today, a single Apostille from Kemenkumham accomplishes the same thing.
The Singapore Academy of Law, the Family Justice Courts, the CPF Board, and retail banks all accept Kemenkumham Apostilled documents without further embassy involvement.
The Step-by-Step AHU Portal Process
1. Prepare Your Documents
Before accessing the portal, you need:
- The original Akta Kematian issued by the local Disdukcapil
- A certified English translation by an Indonesian Sworn Translator (Penerjemah Tersumpah) registered with the Ministry of Law
- The applicant's identification (passport or Indonesian ID)
The Apostille verifies the signature and official seal of the specific Disdukcapil official who signed the death certificate against Kemenkumham's internal specimen database.
2. Submit via apostille.ahu.go.id
Navigate to apostille.ahu.go.id — this is the official portal operated by the Directorate General of General Legal Administration (Ditjen AHU).
Upload clear scans of the original Akta Kematian, fill in the document details, and submit. The system will verify the issuing official's credentials against the Kemenkumham database.
3. Pay the Fee
The statutory fee is approximately 150,000 IDR per document (roughly S$13). Payment is processed through the portal.
4. Collect the Physical Apostille
Once verification is successful, Kemenkumham issues a physical Apostille sticker or certificate that is permanently attached to the original document or its certified true copy. The Apostille contains a unique registration number that can be publicly verified online.
You must physically present the original document for the sticker to be attached. This is why completing the Apostille process before leaving Indonesia is critical.
How Many Documents Should You Apostille?
Apostille at least three to five copies of the Akta Kematian. Each Singaporean institution that needs the death certificate — banks, courts, insurers, the CPF Board — will independently demand an original Apostilled copy.
