How to Apostille a Turkish Death Certificate for UK Use

A Turkish death certificate without a Hague Apostille is not reliably accepted in the UK. The UK Probate Registry, HM Land Registry, and major financial institutions typically demand that the Formül C be legalised — and getting the apostille after you have returned to the UK means either sending someone back to Turkey or hiring a Turkish agent, adding delay and cost to a process that can be completed the same day on-site.

What the Apostille Is

The Hague Apostille is an international authentication stamp that certifies a document's official status across member countries of the Hague Convention. Both Turkey and the UK are members. The apostille confirms that the Turkish civil registrar who signed the Formül C is who they claim to be and that the document is genuine.

Without it, the document may not satisfy the authentication requirements of the UK Probate Registry, HM Land Registry, and major financial institutions, which typically demand legalisation.

Where to Get It

The apostille must be obtained from the District Governorate (Kaymakamlık) in the district where the death was registered. Not the British Consulate. Not the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Ankara. Not any office in the UK. The Kaymakamlık in the specific district.

Get Multiple Originals Apostilled

Each UK institution — Probate Registry, bank, pension provider, life insurance — may need its own apostilled original Formül C. One apostilled copy making the rounds between institutions adds weeks at each stop.

Request at least three certified originals of the Formül C from the Nüfus Müdürlüğü (Population Registry), and apostille each one separately at the Kaymakamlık. Four is better if you have both pension and insurance claims running.

The Translation Step

After apostilling, you need an English translation of the documents. Two audiences need translations for different purposes:

UK probate and financial institutions need a certified English translation of any Turkish-only document — primarily the Ölüm Belgesi (medical death report). The Formül C itself is multilingual and usually accepted without additional translation.

In Turkey: Hire a sworn translator (Yeminli Tercüman) registered with a Turkish notary public (Noter). The translator renders both the document content and the apostille stamp into English. The translation is then notarised at the Noter. Cost runs £40 to £150 per document.

In the UK: Use a translator registered with the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL), the Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI), or the Association of Translation Companies (ATC).

UK Documents Going to Turkey

The apostille works in both directions. If you need to send UK documents to Turkish authorities — birth certificates, marriage certificates, a Grant of Probate, or a Power of Attorney for a Turkish lawyer — those documents must be apostilled by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) before Turkey will accept them.

This is relevant for the Veraset İlamı (inheritance certificate) process, where British heirs must file court documents proving their familial relationship to the deceased.

The Mistake That Costs Months

Families leave Turkey assuming the multilingual Formül C is self-authenticating. It is not. UK probate, asset release, and pension processes typically require the document to be legalised, so the stamp should be obtained at that specific Kaymakamlık before leaving Turkey.
