The Family Experience

Aquamation is more similar to the cremation experience. The family says goodbye, the body goes to a facility, and processed remains are returned in an urn or container. There is no graveside, no soil, no planting — unless the family chooses to inter or scatter the remains afterward.

For families who want active, physical involvement in caring for their person after death, green burial offers something aquamation structurally cannot. For families who find the idea of earth burial difficult but want an eco-friendly alternative, aquamation provides closure without that particular emotional weight.

Cremation Ashes and Memorial Trees: A Chemistry Note

Some families consider aquamation or flame cremation specifically because they want to grow a memorial tree from the remains using a biodegradable "tree pod" urn. This is worth understanding before deciding.

Flame-cremated remains are highly alkaline (often exceeding pH 7.5) and concentrated in sodium salts. It has its own federal, state, and local requirements, usually involves vessel logistics, and may not leave a permanent graveside for visits.
