Green Cremation: Aquamation Environmental Benefits and Limits
The Claims You Will Hear
Aquamation providers consistently cite three environmental advantages over flame cremation: up to 90% less energy consumption, zero direct atmospheric emissions, and no mercury release. These claims come from the Cremation Association of North America (CANA) and several peer-reviewed lifecycle assessments. They are real — but they need context.
Energy Savings: Real but Variable
A flame cremation retort burns natural gas or propane at 1,400°F to 1,800°F for one and a half to three hours per body. An aquamation system heats water to 200°F to 320°F using electricity for four to sixteen hours, depending on the system type.
The energy math favors aquamation because heating water to a few hundred degrees requires dramatically less energy than sustaining combustion at over a thousand degrees, even over a longer cycle. The 90% figure represents the high end of the range and applies to facilities running high-temperature, high-pressure systems. Atmospheric (low-temperature) systems are less efficient per cycle but still consume substantially less total energy than flame.
The energy source matters too. An aquamation facility powered by renewable electricity has a near-zero carbon footprint. One running on coal-generated grid power still outperforms flame cremation, but by a narrower margin.
Emissions: The Zero-Stack Advantage
Flame cremation releases CO₂ from fossil fuel combustion, mercury vapor from dental amalgams (mercury vaporizes at 674°F, well within the retort's operating range), and fine particulate matter. These exit the facility through the stack.
Aquamation produces no stack emissions at all. The process happens in a sealed vessel. Mercury from dental amalgams stays stable because the solution temperature never approaches the vaporization point. Amalgams are recovered intact for recycling.

Water Use: The Honest Number
A single aquamation cycle produces approximately 100 gallons of liquid effluent. That sounds like a lot until you compare it to the water footprint of a traditional casketed burial, which includes concrete vault manufacturing, cemetery lawn irrigation, and formaldehyde-containing embalming chemicals that can leach into groundwater over decades.
The hydrolysate — the liquid discharged after the cycle — is a sterile solution of amino acids, sugars, salts, minerals, and dissolved human tissue. It enters the municipal wastewater treatment system, where it is processed under the requirements that apply in the jurisdiction. Some critics describe this as "flushing a person down the drain," which is emotionally charged and imprecise. The liquid contains no DNA or pathogens.
What Providers Sometimes Leave Out
Electricity is not free of carbon. A provider claiming "zero emissions" may be ignoring the grid emissions from their electricity supply. Ask what powers the facility.
The alkaline chemicals have their own manufacturing footprint. Producing potassium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide requires energy-intensive industrial processes. This upstream cost is real, though small relative to the avoided emissions from fossil fuel cremation.
Not all green certifications are equal. There is no single governing body that certifies aquamation facilities as "green." Ask providers what specific environmental standards they follow rather than accepting a generic eco-label.
How to Verify a Provider's Claims
Request their energy consumption data per cycle (kilowatt-hours). Ask whether they measure their water usage. Check if they can name the source of their electricity. A credible green provider will answer these questions without hesitation.
