The aquamation industry's central marketing claim is that alkaline hydrolysis can use up to 90% less energy than traditional flame cremation. This number comes from comparing the energy sources: flame cremation burns natural gas or propane at 1,400–1,800°F for 1.5–3 hours, releasing CO₂ directly from fossil fuel combustion plus mercury vapor from dental amalgams. Aquamation uses electricity to heat a water-alkali solution to 200–320°F, produces zero direct stack emissions, and retains dental amalgams intact for safe recycling.

That energy-savings figure is an approximate comparison, not a guarantee of a particular carbon reduction: the carbon intensity depends on the local electricity grid. A facility powered by hydroelectric or nuclear energy can achieve a larger reduction. One running on coal-fired electricity still improves over flame cremation, but the gap narrows considerably.

What the Science Supports

Several environmental advantages hold up regardless of energy source:

Zero mercury emissions. Flame cremation vaporizes mercury from dental amalgam fillings at 674°F, sending heavy metal directly into the atmosphere. Aquamation operates below mercury's vaporization point, so amalgams stay intact and can be removed for recycling. This is a straightforward, measurable difference.

No direct combustion byproducts. There is no smokestack, no particulate matter, and no nitrogen oxide release during the aquamation cycle. The only energy-related emissions come from whatever generates the electricity the facility uses.

Lower fossil fuel consumption. Even on a carbon-heavy grid, the total energy input for a 4–16 hour aquamation cycle at 200–320°F is significantly less than sustaining a retort at 1,400°F+ for 2–3 hours. The thermodynamic math favors the lower-temperature process.

Where the Claims Get Fuzzy

Water consumption. Water use varies by vessel and provider; the research does not establish a single gallon figure, so ask how much a cycle uses. Whether that amount matters depends on your local water context. In drought-prone areas, it's worth considering. In regions with abundant water supply, it may be a modest use compared with other household and commercial demands.

Effluent quality. The liquid byproduct (hydrolysate) is a sterile, alkaline solution that's discharged into municipal wastewater treatment systems. The research does not establish a universal independent test result or discharge standard for every provider. The composition — dissolved amino acids, sugars, salts, and soap — is not "just water," despite how some marketing materials characterize it.

"Carbon neutral" labels. A carbon-neutral claim cannot be evaluated from the aquamation cycle alone: it depends on the facility's electricity, chemical supply chain, transport, and any offsets. The process is significantly lower-carbon than flame cremation, but claiming neutrality requires a full lifecycle accounting that most providers haven't published.
