The Advantages
Dramatically lower environmental footprint. Aquamation uses up to 90% less energy than flame cremation and produces zero direct atmospheric emissions — no CO₂ from fuel combustion, no mercury vapor from dental amalgams, no particulate matter. For families who hold environmental values, this is often the deciding factor.
No implant removal required. Flame cremation requires surgical removal of pacemakers and defibrillators before the body enters the retort because lithium-ion batteries can explode at 1,400°F. Aquamation's lower operating temperature (200°F to 320°F) makes this unnecessary. Devices are recovered intact after the cycle. This eliminates a procedure that adds cost, time, and emotional weight to the arrangement.
More remains returned. Families receive 20% to 32% more bone minerals than flame cremation produces. The remains are whiter and finer because they were never burned. For families who want to divide remains among multiple memorials — a burial plot, a scattering ceremony, a keepsake — the larger volume provides more flexibility.
Gentler symbolism. For those who find fire distressing, the water-based process offers emotional comfort. This matters especially in Jewish families where flame cremation carries associations with the Holocaust, and in traditions where water represents purification.
Medical implant recovery. Titanium joints, surgical steel hardware, and dental amalgams come out pristine and undamaged, available for recycling or return to the family. Flame cremation oxidizes and warps these items.
The Drawbacks
Limited availability. Legal in 29 U.S. states and five Canadian jurisdictions as of 2026, but legal status does not guarantee an active local facility. New Hampshire explicitly prohibits it. If you do not live near a provider, you face interstate transport costs and added days on the timeline.
Higher cost than flame cremation. Aquamation typically runs $2,500 to $4,500 versus $1,500 to $4,000 for flame cremation. The premium is not enormous, but it exists — and it can feel harder to justify when family members question the choice.
Longer total timeline. The chemical cycle takes 4 to 16 hours, but the critical difference is the drying phase — 24 to 48 hours in a heated cabinet after the cycle completes. Total time from death to returned remains: six to ten days, with transport, scheduling, or legal holds potentially adding time.
Religious prohibitions. Roman Catholicism, Orthodox Judaism, and Islam explicitly prohibit aquamation. If the deceased or the family practices one of these faiths, choosing aquamation may create lasting family conflict. Hinduism's position is complex and evolving, with traditional practitioners favoring fire.
The wastewater conversation. The liquid byproduct is discharged into municipal sewer systems after the cycle. The sterile hydrolysate contains dissolved human tissue, amino acids, sugars, and salts; the process is scientifically routine but emotionally difficult for some families. Critics use the phrase "flushing remains down the drain," which is misleading but potent. You will likely need to address this with at least one family member or friend.
Problems That Are Preventable
Wrong urn size. Standard cremation urns hold 200 cubic inches. Aquamation remains for an average adult need 220 to 250 cubic inches. Families who buy an urn before receiving the remains often discover it is too small.
Moldy remains. If the processing facility does not fully dry the bone minerals before sealing them in a container, trapped moisture can breed bacterial and fungal growth. Over weeks or months, the family opens the urn to find discoloration and a musty smell. Ask your provider about their drying protocol and drying duration.
Assuming availability. Some families discover during the 72-hour arrangement window that their state has no active facility. This forces a rushed decision about interstate transport or a pivot to an alternative method. If aquamation matters to you, verify provider availability before you need it.
