The most common anxiety around aquamation isn't the cost, the legality, or the timeline. It's a single, visceral question: does the process flush my loved one's body down a drain?

The short answer is no — but the full answer requires understanding what the liquid byproduct actually is, how it's handled, and why the "flushed down the drain" framing is both emotionally loaded and technically inaccurate.

What the Liquid Byproduct Contains

During alkaline hydrolysis, a solution of approximately 95% water and 5% potassium hydroxide (KOH) or sodium hydroxide (NaOH) dissolves the body's soft tissue over 4–16 hours. The resulting liquid — called hydrolysate or effluent — is a sterile, alkaline solution.

The research describes its composition as relatively simple: amino acids (the building blocks of protein), sugars, salts, and small soap molecules formed when the alkali reacts with body fats. It describes the solution as sterile after the high-pH, extended processing cycle.

The solid bone minerals — calcium phosphate — remain on a tray inside the vessel. These are dried, processed, and returned to the family as the remains. Nothing that the family receives or memorializes is part of the liquid discharge.

Where the Effluent Goes

The hydrolysate is discharged into the municipal wastewater treatment system, where it is processed alongside other commercial and residential wastewater before treated water re-enters the environment.

The reports describe discharge to municipal wastewater treatment, but do not establish a universal independent test result for every facility. Ask the provider what local requirements and testing apply.

This doesn't mean the discharge is "just water" — marketing that frames it that way oversimplifies the science. It is routed through the municipality's wastewater treatment system rather than released directly into air or soil.

Why the "Drain" Framing Persists

The phrase "flushing a body down the drain" is used by opponents of aquamation legalization. It's emotionally powerful because it conflates two things: the liquid byproduct of tissue dissolution and the person the family is grieving.

The distinction matters. The remains returned to the family — the bone minerals — are the physical component that families memorialize, scatter, or inter. The liquid is a processed byproduct of organic decomposition, released through wastewater treatment rather than directly into air or soil.

Every disposition method produces byproducts. Flame cremation releases combustion gases, particulate matter, and vaporized mercury into the atmosphere. Traditional burial leaches embalming chemicals and decomposition fluids into surrounding soil and groundwater. Aquamation routes its byproduct through a controlled wastewater treatment system rather than releasing it into air or soil.

What the Catholic Church Objects To

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) issued a formal doctrinal statement in March 2023 declaring aquamation unacceptable for Catholics, citing specifically that approximately 100 gallons of liquid containing dissolved human tissue is discharged into municipal sewer systems. The Church's position is that this treatment of the body violates the dignity owed to the human person, whose body is destined for resurrection.

This is a genuine theological objection, not a safety concern. Families navigating this should understand that the Church's position is about the spiritual significance of bodily integrity, not about environmental or health risks from the effluent itself.

What to Ask the Provider

If the wastewater question weighs on your decision, ask the provider directly:

  • "Has your effluent been independently tested against local discharge standards?"
  • "Does the municipality where you discharge have a specific permit or authorization for aquamation facilities?"
  • "Can you walk me through what happens to the liquid after it leaves your facility?"

A transparent provider should explain the local requirements and testing that apply. The reports do not establish a universal testing or discharge standard, so ask for facility-specific documentation.
