Both aquamation and flame cremation reduce the body to bone minerals that are processed into a fine powder and returned to the family. The difference is in how they get there — and that difference matters more than most funeral homes explain.

Flame cremation uses natural gas or propane to heat a retort to between 1,400°F and 1,800°F. The body combusts over one and a half to three hours. Aquamation places the body in a stainless steel vessel filled with water and an alkaline solution. High-temperature systems heat it to 300°F to 320°F under pressure for four to six hours; low-temperature systems operate at 200°F at atmospheric pressure for twelve to sixteen hours. The water-based chemistry dissolves soft tissue while preserving bone integrity.

Cost Comparison

Flame cremation typically costs between $1,500 and $4,000. Aquamation ranges from $2,500 to $4,500. The price difference varies by provider and region. However, aquamation eliminates certain costs that flame cremation sometimes incurs. Pacemaker removal surgery, which flame cremation requires to prevent battery explosions, is unnecessary with aquamation. The device is recovered intact after the cycle.

Traditional casketed burial, for reference, runs $7,000 to $15,000 or more.

Environmental Impact

This is where the gap is widest. Flame cremation burns fossil fuel for hours, releasing CO₂, mercury vapor from dental amalgams, and particulate matter directly into the atmosphere. Aquamation uses up to 90% less energy and produces zero direct stack emissions — no mercury, no greenhouse gases from the process itself.

The liquid byproduct (hydrolysate) is a sterile solution containing dissolved human tissue, amino acids, sugars, and salts that is discharged into the municipal wastewater system under the requirements that apply in the jurisdiction. Some families find this fact unsettling before they understand that the liquid contains no DNA or pathogens.

Flame cremation is available everywhere. Aquamation is legal in 29 U.S. states and five Canadian jurisdictions as of 2026, but availability varies and some jurisdictions have no active facility. New Hampshire explicitly prohibits the process.
