Aquamation Ashes: What They Look Like and How Much You Receive
What the Remains Look Like
Aquamation produces a white to off-white powder with a fine, sand-like texture. It is noticeably different from flame cremation ashes, which tend to be grayer and coarser because the high-temperature fire (1,400°F to 1,800°F) oxidizes and scorches the bone minerals.
Because aquamation operates at much lower temperatures (200°F to 320°F), the bone minerals are never burned. They emerge clean and structurally intact before being processed in a cremulator — the same mechanical pulverizer used after flame cremation — into a uniform powder.
The remains are sterile. They carry no pathogens, no DNA, and no identifiable biological material.
How Much You Receive
This is where aquamation catches many families off guard. You will receive 20% to 32% more remains than flame cremation produces. For an average adult, that means approximately 220 to 250 cubic inches of processed bone minerals.
The reason is straightforward: flame cremation burns away some bone mass along with soft tissue. Aquamation preserves virtually all of the mineral skeleton. The chemistry dissolves only soft tissue; bone is left behind.
For larger individuals, the volume can be even greater. The 20% to 32% range is an average across body sizes.
The Urn Sizing Problem
The cremation urn industry standard is one cubic inch of capacity per pound of body weight, and most standard adult urns hold 200 cubic inches. This sizing rule was developed for flame cremation.
An aquamation urn needs 220 to 250 cubic inches for an average adult — sometimes more. A standard 200-cubic-inch urn will not hold all of the remains. Families who discover this after the ashes arrive face an upsetting choice: split the remains across two containers, leave some behind, or scramble to buy a larger urn.
If you are buying an urn before the remains are returned, confirm the cubic-inch capacity with the manufacturer. Companion urns (designed for two sets of remains) and oversized memorial urns both work. Biodegradable urns for water scattering should also be sized for the larger volume.

Scattering, Burial, and Memorial Plantings
The white, fine texture of aquamation remains makes them versatile for memorialization:
Cemetery interment. The remains can be buried in a plot, placed in a columbarium niche, or interred in a green cemetery using a biodegradable container.
Water scattering. For scattering at sea in the United States, the EPA requires the ceremony to take place at least three nautical miles from land. Use a biodegradable urn rated for aquamation volume.
Memorial plantings. Aquamation remains can be mixed with soil to nourish a memorial tree or garden. A critical detail: the remains have a pH of about 8 to 9 (mildly alkaline) and are concentrated in calcium phosphate. Mix them with at least ten times their volume of rich organic compost before planting to prevent chemical root burns. Acid-loving plants will need additional sulfur or peat-free coir to balance the soil pH.
Avoiding the Most Common Mistake
The urn sizing miscalculation is the single most frequent problem families report after choosing aquamation. It is entirely preventable with five minutes of planning, but it is the kind of detail that gets lost when you are making arrangements under grief and time pressure.
