Aquamation Ashes — Mold, Smell, and Urn Problems to Prevent

The Problem Nobody Warns You About

Most families who choose aquamation receive their loved one's remains without any issue — a fine, white, sand-like powder that's clean and odorless. But a small number of families have opened an urn weeks or months later to find green-yellow discoloration, a musty or fishy smell, or visible mold growth on the surface of the remains.

This is a real problem, not an internet rumor. It's also entirely preventable. Understanding the cause gives you the information to prevent it before it happens and address it if it does.

What Causes Mold in Aquamation Remains

The cause is straightforward: moisture.

After the alkaline hydrolysis cycle completes, the recovered bone minerals are saturated with water. They must be transferred to a heated drying cabinet and dried thoroughly for 24–48 hours before being processed in a cremulator (the mechanical pulverizer that reduces bone fragments to the final powder).

If the drying step is cut short — whether from operator negligence, equipment malfunction, or rush processing — residual moisture gets sealed inside the urn along with the remains. Fine calcium phosphate powder in an enclosed, humid environment is an ideal substrate for bacterial and fungal growth.

Over weeks, that trapped moisture cultivates colonies that produce the discoloration and odor families discover when they open the container.

How to Prevent It

Prevention happens at two points: before you take the remains home, and after.

At the provider:

  • Ask the provider directly: "How long do you dry the remains after the cycle, and what equipment do you use?" The answer should be a dedicated heated drying cabinet for 24–48 hours. If they're vague or mention air drying only, that's a concern.
  • When you receive the remains, examine them. Properly dried aquamation remains are a dry, fine, white to light tan powder. If the powder feels damp, clumps together when pressed, or the container shows any condensation, do not seal the urn. Ask the provider to re-dry.

At home:

  • Store the urn in a dry, temperature-stable environment. Avoid basements, garages, or any location prone to humidity fluctuations.
  • If you're transferring remains from a temporary container to a permanent urn, check for moisture first. If anything seems damp, ask the provider to re-dry the remains before sealing them in the final urn.
  • Biodegradable urns designed for water scattering or burial are not meant for long-term storage. If you're keeping the remains at home, use a sealed, non-porous container.

What to Do If You Find Mold

If you open the urn and find discoloration or odor:

  1. Don't panic. The bone mineral composition hasn't changed — the mold is surface growth associated with residual moisture from incomplete drying.
  2. Contact the provider immediately. A responsible facility will acknowledge the failure and offer to re-process the remains: re-drying them thoroughly in the heated cabinet and returning them in a clean container.
  3. If re-processing isn't an option, ask another qualified provider about safe handling and reprocessing rather than attempting to dry moldy remains yourself.

The Urn Sizing Problem

A related issue that catches families off guard: aquamation produces 20–32% more remains by volume than flame cremation. The standard cremation urn is designed for 200 cubic inches — enough for flame-cremated remains based on the industry rule of one cubic inch per pound of body weight. But that standard doesn't account for the greater bone mass preservation of alkaline hydrolysis.

Most adults processed through aquamation need a 220–250 cubic inch urn. If the provider gives you a too-small temporary container and packs the remains tightly to fit, that compression combined with any residual moisture makes the mold problem worse.

Ask the provider about expected remain volume before purchasing an urn. Better to have slightly more space than to discover at the memorial that the remains don't fit.

Choosing a Provider Who Gets the Details Right

The drying step is unglamorous and easy to shortcut. It's also the single biggest quality indicator for an aquamation facility. A provider who takes the drying process seriously — dedicated equipment, sufficient time, visual and tactile inspection before packaging — is one who takes the entire process seriously.
