FCDO Apostille for a UK Death Certificate — India Requirements

If someone has died in the UK and you need to use the death certificate in India — to claim bank accounts, transfer property, file EPFO claims, or obtain a succession certificate — the document must be apostilled by the FCDO. Without that apostille stamp, Indian institutions will reject it as unverified.

The process is straightforward, but one common mistake costs families both time and money: choosing the wrong apostille type.

Paper Apostille vs e-Apostille: The Trap

The FCDO offers two apostille formats, and only one works for death certificates.

Paper apostille (£45): A physical stamp attached to the original death certificate. Takes 10–25 working days through the postal service. This is the only valid option for civil registry documents — death certificates, birth certificates, and marriage certificates.

e-Apostille (£35): A digital certificate for electronically signed documents. Faster (1–2 working days) and cheaper. But it is strictly prohibited for death certificates. The FCDO will reject the application, you lose the £35 fee, and you lose days of processing time.

The reason: UK death certificates are physical, wet-ink documents issued by a local registrar. They do not carry digital signatures, so the e-Apostille verification chain cannot apply to them.

The Express Agent Route

If you need the apostille within 24–48 hours — and most repatriation situations demand it — you cannot rely on the standard postal service. Instead, use an FCDO-registered legalisation agent.

These agents have direct counter access at the FCDO Legalisation Office in London and can collect the apostilled document the next business day. The FCDO fee through an agent is £40 per document (slightly less than the £45 postal rate), but the agent charges their own service fee on top.

Total cost through an express agent: £80–£130 per document, including the government fee, the agent's service charge, and tracked return postage.

Established agents include Edward Young Notaries and Apostille London. Both accept orders online and handle the physical submission themselves.

What You Need Before Submitting

The death certificate you submit must be an original certified copy issued by the UK registrar or ordered from the General Register Office (GRO). Photocopies do not qualify, even if they are notarised.

This is why ordering 8–12 certified copies at the time of death registration matters. Each copy costs £12.50 in England and Wales or £15 in Scotland and Northern Ireland. If you need more copies later, standard pricing follows the jurisdiction: £12.50 per copy in England and Wales or £15 in Scotland and Northern Ireland. The priority service costs £38.50 per copy.

You do not need to get the death certificate certified by a solicitor or notary before submitting it for apostille. Civil registry documents go directly to the FCDO. Adding unnecessary solicitor certification wastes money and does not strengthen the document.

What Indian Institutions Expect

Indian banks, EPFO offices, and revenue authorities expect a paper apostille physically attached to the death certificate. When you present the document:

• The apostille page is stapled or bound to the back of the death certificate
• It carries the FCDO's seal, the certifying officer's signature, and a unique reference number
• Indian officials can verify it through the Hague Conference's e-Register if they choose to

For banking claims, the applicable bank threshold determines whether a succession certificate is needed; the apostilled death certificate is the anchor document. Without it, banks will not process the claim.
